Find Your Shade: Coaching Wisdom for

the Summer-Weary

Greetings!

It’s OK to be in the minority, you know?

OK I’ll go first. I think summer sucks.

Not just me, is it? Anyone?

It’s like a three-month illness that one has to endure feverishly and sweatily and yet still have to work, function and worst of all – have fun. The sun throws many things emotionally and physically into full glare that would be better left in the shade.

It’s not like you see in Conde Nast Traveller; all kaftans and sundowners and hair that’s never seen the frizz of humidity.   It is full of endless, ugly discomforts. I am not talking the pulling the neck of your T-shirt with a “I don’t like it this hot!” cliches.  Nor the draining drip of feeling like a New Orleans’ broil twinned with a tandoori oven on public transport.  It’s not even feeling the pinch, chaff and rub of punitive summer dressing.

When the heat is on are you, like me, turned off?

While everyone else is ‘living their best life’, I’m quietly unravelling in a linen dress that doesn’t (contrary to what the fashion gurus say) look good with creases.

For me it’s about the pressure to “enjoy” the outdoors when you don’t share that Labrador pup-like glee of throwing yourself on the nearest patch of grass.

It’s also become illegal to stay inside when it’s sunny punishable by passive-aggressive comments like ‘OOH, isn’t it GORGEOUS out?’”

Picnics? Picky Bits enjoyed with ants, wasps and grass-triggered eczema. What’s wrong with hearty meals supped in darkened Victorian rooms?

I found myself scrabbling around my salvias this morning looking earnestly for little brown spiders; the first hopeful sign autumn might be on its way.  The solstice is behind us, the evenings are closing in by minutes per day and it’s an endurance for those who have the reverse of gloomy winder SAD and are unwitting slaves to the toxic positivity of summer.

So for those of you in the cool minority here are a few after-sun salves that may get you through the hypnogogic mayhem of the months ahead:

  • Heat and self-consciousness are prickly associates. It’s OK to not bare all. No need for body-con fabrics that cling like a needy ex.
  • Not everyone restores energy the same way – sunlight for some is stimulation – for others enervation. That’s OK too.
  • Honesty beats obligation
  •  Not every sunny day has to be a personal development opportunity
  • You can still light candles at 4pm – that’ll fool them!
  •  Rest, boundaries, and pro-comfort on your terms

And finally acceptance is everything. If may not be “you” to be a summer person but you can do it your way and put the others on ice.

Summer’s for amateurs anyway 😊
