Dear Friends:
At Holtz Children's Hospital, the recipe for success is strong leadership, excellent clinical care, and state-of-the-art technology, combined with special therapeutic services that enhance patient outcomes. It is also necessary to have philanthropic supporters who understand and appreciate our mission and are willing to help expand our programs and services. That is why we are so grateful to the Sherman Family Foundation, which recently made a $1 million gift to establish pediatric rehabilitation services at Jackson Health System. This gift will make a significant impact on our ability to provide outstanding care for our young patients.
When it comes to hospital leadership, we are fortunate to have Hamilton Clark serve as senior vice president and chief executive officer at Holtz Children's Hospital and the Women's Hospital at Jackson Memorial. Hamilton has proven to be a visionary leader, and we are delighted to feature him in this issue of our newsletter.
Our Miracle Story is about Sasha Gadea, a courageous patient diagnosed with a life-threatening congenital disorder that created giant vein malformations and aneurysms in her brain. Thanks to the outstanding care she received at Holtz Children's, Sasha experienced a remarkable recovery and is now enjoying her life more than ever.
Some might think children don't need to continue their education while they are in the hospital. Thankfully, that isn't the case at Holtz Children's, where the Jason Taylor Foundation has established a center to help hospitalized children learn and study in a child-friendly setting.
Thoughtful leadership, clinical expertise and technology, therapeutic services, and generous donors are what make Holtz Children's Hospital one of the most respected children's hospitals in the southeastern United States. We hope you take pride in knowing that you are part of that essential mix as a friend and supporter of our hospital, and we are incredibly grateful.
Sincerely,

Sherman Family Foundation Donates $1 Million to Establish Pediatric Rehabilitation Services at Jackson Health System

Pediatric rehabilitation services, thanks to a $1 million donation from the Sherman Family Foundation.
|

We are so grateful to the Sherman Family Foundation for a generous donation of $1 million to establish pediatric rehabilitation services at Jackson Health System. The gift was made in honor of Dr. Barth Green, and the staff at Jackson, who were instrumental in the care of George Sherman.
"The Sherman Family Foundation mission is to be supportive of education, particularly in the inner city, and especially directed toward children's health education and well-being," said Betsy Sherman, who, in partnership with her husband George, manages the foundation. "We are honored to be able to offer this gift of $1 million to establish pediatric rehabilitation services at Jackson Health System."
George and Betsy Sherman are philanthropists with a profound belief in the power of education to create better opportunities, healthier communities and stronger families. Through their foundation, they make long-term, strategic investments in programs that are scalable and have compelling evidence of helping vulnerable, economically disadvantaged children and their families achieve better outcomes in all aspects of their lives.
"We are sincerely humbled and touched by this gift from the Sherman family," said Flavia Llizo, co-president and chief development officer at Jackson Health Foundation. "Through this donation, Jackson will be able to establish much-needed rehabilitation services for our young patients. Thank you to George and Betsy Sherman for their generosity, compassion and kindness. We are forever grateful."

Miracle Story
Holtz Children's Hospital Medical Team
Saves Life of Key Largo Teen
|
|
The remarkable bravery and resilience of the young patients who have been treated at Holtz Children’s Hospital continues to inspire us every day. In 2017, Sasha Gadea, a vibrant elementary school student living in Key Largo, began suffering from headaches. Because Sasha wore glasses, her parents took her to get her vision checked, thinking the problem might be related to her sight. But two years later, Sasha’s headaches worsened. After a visit to her local hospital in Key Largo, Sasha, then 13, was referred to Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center. Once she arrived, her condition was so bad that she was rushed to nearby Holtz Children’s Hospital, where she was diagnosed with a condition called arteriovenous malformation (AVM) – a congenital disorder which consists of tangled abnormal blood vessels connecting arteries and veins in the brain. After lifesaving surgery at Holtz Children’s, Sasha was on the road to recovery. Click here to read Sasha’s miracle story.

Jason Taylor Foundation Helps Children Continue to Learn and Grow Academically
While in the Hospital
|
|
Education doesn't have to stop when children are admitted to the hospital. At Holtz Children's Hospital, patients have access to resources to continue their educational development, thanks to the Jason Taylor Children's Learning Center.
"All children, whether at home or in the hospital, should have access to educational resources," said Flavia Llizo, co-president and chief development officer at Jackson Health Foundation. "The Jason Taylor Foundation supports our efforts to create a setting where patients can stay connected through academic and social activities to make their transition back to the regular classroom a little easier after they leave the hospital."
The Jason Taylor Children's Learning Center opens the world to hospitalized children, allowing them to engage in social activities, reinforce an academic curriculum through educational websites and the Internet while giving them the ability to be themselves in a child-friendly setting. Patients have access to technology, even when they are unable to leave their rooms. Using laptops provided by the center, they can maintain connections to family and friends through email, social networks, and other resources. Laptops are also provided for parents to help them access their email, conduct online banking, and visit educational and supportive websites.
Donations from generous, compassionate donors like you help Holtz Children’s Hospital continue to expand upon resources and pave the way for patients’ speedy recovery. Click here to make a donation today.
