Four City Charter Amendments Approved

Last week, the majority of Coral Gables voters approved four of the five proposed amendments to the City Charter. Approved were the amendments of a new provision for the suspension of a member of the City Commission for reason of incapacity, an amendment providing that the Mayor appoints the Vice Mayor and any replacement thereof, an amendment revising procedures for removal of City Commissioners to be consistent with gubernatorial procedures under state law, and an amendment providing for run-off elections in City Commission and Mayoral races. Not approved by the voters was an amendment providing for the removal of the Trial Board appeal process for City employees. Read more...

Free Movie: Back to the Future

Join us tomorrow Thursday, November 17 at 7 p.m. for the inaugural Movie on the Mile with the showing of the original Back to the Future, starring Michael J. Fox. The City of Coral Gables is offering a free action-adventure flick every third Thursday of the month at The Plaza at 150 Miracle Mile, courtesy of the McBride Family. Celebrate "Holiday on the Mile" with Junior Orange Bowl Parade

You're in for a treat on Sunday, November 27, starting at 4 p.m. at the Junior Orange Bowl "Holiday on the Mile" Parade. The caravan of fun begins on Alhambra Circle and Ponce de Leon, heads south to Miracle Mile, and finishes at the grandstands in front of City Hall on Biltmore Way. A pre-parade show will feature the Actor's Playhouse performing hits from Million Dollar Quartet, the Tony award-winning Broadway musical. The Parade is free to attend and open to the public. Grandstand tickets will be on sale for $10, or $30 with access to the Hospitality Suite. Read more...

Jazz in the Gables Returns Tuesday Nights

Jazz in the Gables returns to Downtown Coral Gables with a new day, time and location. The free jazz concerts will delight audiences of all ages every Tuesday night, from 6-7:30 p.m. until March 2017. Concerts take place at The Plaza at 150 Miracle Mile, courtesy of the McBride Family. Performing on November 22 is the Gary Keller Organ Trio. This is your perfect excuse to shop or grab a bite to eat around the Mile and Giralda Avenue and finish your day relaxing with the wonderful sounds of jazz music. Read more...

  •  Limited route on Saturday, November 26: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. only (Ponce de Leon Blvd. to and from Shops at Merrick Park)
The following facilities/services will be closed on November 24 & 25:
  • City Hall services at 405 Biltmore Way
  • Passport Office at 4520 Ponce de Leon Blvd.
  • Adult Activity Center at 2 Andalusia Avenue
  • Venetian Pool at 2701 De Soto Blvd.
  • War Memorial Youth Center at 405 University Drive

Caroling competition
Caroling Competition Brings Joyful Falalalala

Local school students will sing their best falalalala sounds at the annual Merrick Festival Caroling Competition, beginning Wednesday, November 30 with performances through Sunday, December 4 at the steps of the 550 Biltmore Way building in Downtown Coral Gables. Presented this year by UHealth Jackson Urgent Care Centers , more than 1,500 young talented singers will represent 30 middle and senior high schools from public, private and parochial institutions from Miami-Dade and Broward counties. All performances take place from 7-10 p.m. and are free and open to the public. The Grand Prize winners return on Tuesday, December 6, 7 p.m. to perform at the Award Show. Read more...
Giralda's Restaurant Row Offering Free Valet Parking
In partnership with the City, Restaurant Row merchants on the 100 block of Giralda Avenue will provide complimentary valet vouchers to their customers, at their discretion. Valet locations are located at each end of Giralda Avenue on Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Galiano Street. Additional convenient and affordable parking locations are available throughout Downtown Coral Gables. The Villagers Celebrate 50 Years of Saving Places

The Villagers are turning 50.   This dedicated group has transitioned from painting wrought iron at the Venetian Pool to donating more than $1 million in support of local historic restoration and preservation. The Villagers supported much work in the City of Coral Gables, including the restoration work at City Hall, Venetian Pool, Coral Gables Library and the Merrick House. Read more...

Meet the JOB Royal Court

Last month, the Junior Orange Bowl celebrated the regal tradition of crowning its Royal Court. Queen Gwendolyn Odin, along with Princess Celine Alvarez, Princess Bianca Delgado, and Little Sister Jasmine Willis will reign over all Junior Orange Bowl events during the 2016 - 2017 festival season. FDOT is doing construction along US1 from Santona Street to Granada Boulevard and at the intersection of Grand Avenue. This project will take four months to complete. There will be periodic lane closures.

FDOT is doing roadway construction along LeJeune Road from Almeria Avenue to Majorca Avenue. This project will last until June of next year. Lane closures may occur during non-peak hours on nights and weekends. Please obey all posted signs and speed limits.
