September 2020 President's Message

I hope that we find you all well with this month’s dR. With heatwaves, fires, and continued health concerns and gathering restrictions due to the pandemic, it seems 2020 just continues to dish out challenges. Social distancing has not only made it more difficult to have our normal social interactions, it has made staying in touch in times of crisis more difficult too. If you have been or are currently being negatively impacted by all that is happening and need help...or just want someone to listen, as your club president, I would like to hear from you. By ourselves, troubles can seem insurmountable, but together we can meet any challenge; “many hands make light work.” Despite our current situationally necessitated “social distance”, you are never alone.

As I mentioned last month, I was looking forward to competing in Series 5 of PCA Sim Racing beginning on September 4th. I am happy to report that the season jumped off with a bang (pun intended) with race one at the virtual Laguna Seca, and race two just completed on September 11th at the virtual MoSport. I am competing in the PCA Sport class. The competition is fierce, the participants are fast...I mean like, humbling fast, and it is amazingly fun participating. I’ve learned so much in just two races, and can’t wait to gauge my improvement at the end of the season.
If you have any interest in racing as a participant or as a spectator, and have not yet checked out the PCA Sim Racing sessions, I urge you to do so. Their immersive nature just might surprise you. There are some easy ways for you participate as a spectator, even long after a race has concluded:

If you think you might be interested in participating, or at least exploring what it might take to get set up, please don’t be shy. I’m happy to share what I’ve learned, and to help you in any way I can. We need more Zone 7 folks competing, and as has been true with auto-cross in the past, Redwood Region has the capacity to lead the way!

Thank you, be well, and stay safe out there!

Sierra Nevada Region Celebrates 55th Anniversary

The Sierra Nevada Region celebrated their 55th anniversary at a Show and Shine event at San Rafael Community Park in Reno on August 2nd. Due to local restrictions related to Covid 19, attendance was limited to only 25 cars. Club president, Millie Smith, received a letter from national president, Tom Gorsuch presented to her by myself and national club treasurer and SNR member Craig Kugler helped to present their award plaque as well as a notebook with copies of the club’s original application for its charter as well as their original set of club bylaws. It is significant to note that the first club president of the Sierra Nevada Region was Burt Propp, who later served as national club president. Congratulations to the members of Sierra Nevada Region and wishing you all another 50 years!

Zone 7 Concours Series Suffers Another Setback

With Covid 19 cases starting to flatten but with the death rate rising, nearly 38 counties in California are still under monitoring by the State. That being said, many regions have struggled to secure sites and permission to schedule their concour events. Recently, Al Price, Sacramento Valley Region Concours chair notified me that the Niello dealership location that he had secured was no longer available due to concerns with Covid 19. This cancellation follows Redwood Regions cancellation of their annual concours at the spectacular Ledson Winery.

This leaves just 3 events scheduled for the 2020 Concours season. October 4th hosted by Monterey Bay Region, October 11th hosted by Loma Prieta Region, and October 18th hosted by Golden Gate Region. It is the hope of the Zone concours chairs, Roy Schauben and Simone Kopitzki, that these three remaining regions will be able to continue with their events as planned. Should just one of the remaining concours events be cancelled due to Covid 19 issues, the Zone 7 Concours series awards will be cancelled. The regions which do hold their events will continue as scheduled but without counting toward any year end awards.

Zone Autocross Series Update

The Zone Autocross series is off to a great start with 7 events scheduled for the series and 3 events completed. Sacramento Valley Region held the first Zone event at Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, California with nearly 60 drivers competing for year end awards while Loma Prieta and Golden Gate Regions held their dual events at the Cow Palace in Daly City to a group of 50 drivers on both Saturday and Sunday. The county of San Mateo has instituted strict large group gatherings to no more than 50 persons. Registration for the Cow Palace events opened on August 11th and sold out in less than 3 minutes. At the time of this writing, Loma Prieta Region has 2 openings remaining, but I believe they will also reach their capacity of 50 drivers by the time of the event.

National News and Event Updates

The PCA National Awards ceremony was held virtually on August 19th and can be seen on PCA’s You Tube channel. The following Zone 7 regions received recognition for their efforts:

Newsletter Contest, 3rd Place Class III (regions with 200-399 members):  Prieta Post, Loma Prieta Region

Website Contest, 3rd Place Class II (regions with 100-199 members): Yosemite Region

Website Contest, 2nd Place Class III (regions with 200-399 members):  Loma Prieta Region

A complete list of all national award winners can be viewed at the following link:  https://youtu.be/TXMl2jFTb-Q

The Executive Council recently announced at its August Zone Rep meeting that it is in beta testing for a new software product called File Cabinet. File Cabinet will allow for all regions in PCA to store their electronic data such as copies of their bylaws, policies and procedures, waivers, past newsletters, and all sorts of club information that can often get lost between one chair or board to another. Expect it to be available sometime in 2021.

Redwood's First Autocross on 2020 is on!
Stacy O'Connell
Co-Chair Autocross

It's been a bumpy start to our autocross season for sure: Our May event at the paddock at Sonoma Raceway was cancelled due to the COVID shelter in place orders. We had a great opportunity to run at Cow Palace on two dates in September, but noise complaints from nearby neighbors caused an unfortunate end to that just as we opened registration.

Not to fear, our two-day Zone 7 event with the Sacramento Valley PCA region at Thunderhill is a go! It's coming up Sunday, October 11 and registration just opened on MSR. If you haven't autocrossed at Thunderhill yet, it's a great venue. There are still rooms at some of the local hotels for those interested in both days. We are also gauging interest from those who may want to camp overnight, so if that's of interest to you, let me know.

My co-chair Drew has to sit this one out due to a prior commitment, but I hope to see some of you there. If you have any questions that you don't see answered on MSR, feel free to email me.

Our November 22 AX at the paddock in Sonoma Raceway is also still on. Hold the date --registration will open in a few weeks.

Your Membership Benefits: PCA Juniors Program
Tom Short
Membership Director
As the pandemic and lockdown drags on, I, like many of our members, am missing the camaraderie and fun that Redwood Region’s various driving events reliably delivered. The good news is that we’re still here planning events geared for these unprecedented times.

Last month’s Social Distancing Rally was a success (article in last month’s DR) based on the feedback we received from participants. Many members participated, and prizes were awarded in various categories.

Several of our members are also getting some autocross in, participating in events hosted by Golden Gate Region.

For members with kids at home, though, these times can be particularly challenging. For you, I’d recommend checking out PCA’s Juniors Program if you haven’t already done so. Here’s the full rundown of this great program, copied from the PCA.org website. Be sure to check out the activities page link at the end!

PCA Juniors is a program for Porsche enthusiasts under age 18.
Participants must be registered by an active PCA member.

What is the PCA Juniors program?

It’s not just the cars… and now it’s not just the grown-ups!
With our new PCA Juniors program, PCA is about the kids too!

The PCA Juniors program has been created so kids can enjoy PCA events, learn about Porsches and build the enthusiasm that runs through all of the Porsche Club of America.

Who is eligible?

Any child under age 18 who is registered by a current PCA member can participate in the program.

(Note: This is not a PCA Membership.)

What will the child receive?

PCA Juniors will receive a welcome package that includes an age-appropriate gift and PCA Juniors ID badge. We look forward to developing the program and its features over time.

What does it cost to register?

It’s FREE! Participants must be registered by an active PCA member, and there is no cost to join!

Check out our new activities page, which features downloadable and shareable coloring sheets that were custom designed by coloring book illustrator Fireball Tim. More activities coming soon!

Hagerty is the official sponsor of PCA Juniors.

In August 2020, 23 PCA Redwood Region members marked five or more years in the club, including two members with over 40 years in our club, one member with over 30 years in our club, and one more who has been member for over 20 years. Congratulations to all of you for such long-term loyalty and thank you to all of you who are marking anniversaries – I hope you are enjoying your membership. and taking advantage of all the great benefits our club has to offer!

In August we welcomed nine new members to Redwood Region PCA. You will be receiving a complimentary Redwood Region name badge shortly. Also, if you’d like to order a name badge for your associate or family member, follow the instructions on how to do so on our website.

Regarding our events, the health and safety of our members and fellow car enthusiasts is of utmost importance to the Redwood Region and the broader Porsche Club of America. As a result, we have greatly reduced our regular calendar of activities due to recommended health and safety social distancing measures currently in place. We still have some upcoming virtual events as well as some interesting new challenges that you can do on your own, so be sure to check out our website calendar and watch for our email and newsletter for more info.

I encourage everyone to check out our website to get the latest news about what’s going on with Redwood Region members and sign up for upcoming events. Our events are a great way to meet other PCA members and have some fun with great people and our amazing cars. In the meantime, we wish you and your families and friends well during these extraordinary times. Stay healthy.

This future collectible 2001 996 911 Carrera is finished in Arctic Silver over Black Partial Leather is a fantastic example owned by Porsche owner all my life. Optioned with the proper 6-speed manual gearbox and with 88,000 miles it fits the perfect bill of a gorgeous driver-quality 996 at an entry level price. It originally left the factory in June 2001. I bought in April of 2018 with 68,000 miles. At the time it was my second car to a 2015 Cayman S. I sold the Cayman to a fellow PC member. I’m now buying a C4S. This Carrera has clearly been well cared for throughout its life. The Carfax (I cannot find it) when I bought it showed the transmission out at around 32,000 miles. This is consistent with IMS bearing replacement then. I believe I am the second owner. This Carrera represents a great value in the 911 market, the most popular and desirable color combo at a fair price.

I have 40 years of Porsche Panorama magazines that I would like to give to a good home. Cleaning out my office and didn't want to throw these away. Hate to put them in the recycling bin.
