MTSU CIM Student Awarded Bob Weatherton Scholarship

The founder of the American Concrete Pumping Association, Bob Weatherton, was recognized in 2014 as one of the Most Influential People in the concrete industry. To honor Weatherton’s memory and contributions to the concrete industry, in Feb. 2015, World of Concrete (WOC) established the Bob Weatherton award, a scholarship for a Concrete Industry Management student. The award includes a $2,500 scholarship. Criteria for the selection of the award included practical application of the selected topics, including safety, productivity and industry improvement. The papers and presentations are judged by a panel of industry professionals who make the selections.

On Jan. 24, in conjunction with the CIM National Steering Committee Board meeting at WOC and following her presentation, Kellie Christian, a student at Middle Tennessee State University, was awarded the Weatherton scholarship. Congratulations Kellie!

CIM Students Begin 2024 With Travel to Las Vegas and Denver for Industry Events

As the calendar flipped to 2024, students and faculty from all five CIM programs traveled to not one, but two concrete industry events. These events, World of Concrete in Las Vegas and The Precast Show in Denver provide a unique opportunity for students to connect with industry professionals, gain insights and explore the latest trends in the concrete industry.

During the week of Jan. 22-25 at World of Concrete, students and faculty were busy staffing the CIM booth, assisting with the CIM Annual Auction and competing for the Bob Weatherton Scholarship. At The Precast Show (Feb. 8-10), teams of CIM students once again staffed our booth talking to show attendees about the CIM program and were also busy competing in the design competitions.

Concrete Industry Leaders Support CIM at MTSU

CIM programs partner with leaders in the concrete industry to ensure we stay current on industry practices and future needs. We are pleased to say that, in March, we collaborated with two such leaders, Irving Materials Incorporated (IMI) and Master Builders Solutions. Our CIM students attended a learning session and networking event hosted by IMI to gain additional knowledge about the company. They also offered opportunities for full-time work and internships.

In addition, the MTSU CIM program recently hosted an event held by Master Builders Solutions. More than 50 attendees from ready-mix and precast producers visited our campus to dive into the world of cement aggregate admixtures and concrete mix designs.

Working alongside their peers from architecture and civil engineering, Dylan and Mohamed showcased their talents in designing the Museum of Art structure building. In this competition, students apply individually and are grouped into teams of four, consisting of two architecture students, one CIM or CM student and one engineering student. The winning team receives a $4,000 cash prize ($1,000 per member), while the People's Choice Award offers $500 per team member.

Both Mohamed and Dylan demonstrated outstanding contributions to their respective teams, culminating in their team winning the People's Choice Award. Beyond the monetary prize, the experience gained was invaluable as they exchanged knowledge and skills with fellow competitors.
