Grief is a deeply personal journey, and for many, it can feel isolating. The JFS Grief Support Group, led by clinician Mitchell Cole, LAMHC, offers a space where individuals can find comfort, connection, and understanding.

Mitchell brings a wealth of experience to the group, having facilitated grief support groups through the Den for Grieving Kids and at Calvary Hospital.

“By sharing experiences, feelings, and emotions tied to their grief, the members know they are not alone,” Mitchell explains. “Group members typically form a bond… they will just be there for each other—no words are needed.”

Mitchell emphasizes that grief doesn’t follow a timeline. “We don’t ‘get over’ grief. Eventually, we learn to live with it. The love and respect for our loved one stays with us and becomes part of our journey.”

One participant, who joined the group after losing his wife of sixty years, describes the group as “an anchor.” He found comfort in seeing others navigate their grief and even formed new friendships. “It was helpful to see that others confronted their grief successfully,” he says.

He encourages others to give it a try: “The members treat newcomers sensitively. If it doesn't work for you, stop coming. Trying it out can't hurt.” Mitchell explains, “Members can’t fix aloneness and they can’t make it go away. They help by being present.”

Recently, Ukrainian newcomers participated in the second session of our Pathways to Prosperity program, which focused on understanding and accessing higher education opportunities in the U.S. The session explored how to identify personal and professional goals, navigate the college application process, apply for financial aid, and evaluate options for credential recognition and degree pathways. Participants also learned about community college programs, English language support, and career-aligned education planning.

The session was facilitated by Simon Antoniuk, a former JFS client and current Community Integration Program Assistant, whose own educational journey at Norwalk Community College added a meaningful perspective.

"My son is absolutely loving the GCDS Summer Program. Every day he comes home full of excitement; it's been a fantastic experience for him!"

"I want to sincerely thank you for all the support you provided during the visa process. Although we didn't meet in person, I felt your support every step of the way, and that gave me great peace of mind. I wanted to express my gratitude for your dedication and kindness throughout this process."
