How Families Found Community Through the SFDS Empowerment Saturday Program

Thank you!

Some of the most meaningful learning at SFDS doesn't only happen Monday through Friday.

This year, our Empowerment Saturday Program became a place where families could slow down, connect, ask questions, and learn together, while their children explored art, music, sports, and other adaptive recreational activities.

Designed with families in mind, the program removed many of the barriers that often prevent participation. Things such as transportation, lunch, childcare, and interpreters were all provided at no cost, making it easier for every family to attend.

Throughout the year, parents and caregivers participated in American Sign Language classes, support groups led by our school social worker, and educational workshops on topics ranging from augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and listening and spoken language strategies to behavior management, audiological equipment, home services, and IEP preparation. Every session was designed to strengthen communication, build confidence, and equip families with tools they can use every day.

At the same time, students and their siblings enjoyed enriching recreational experiences in adapted music, art, and sports; activities that are not always accessible to children who are Deaf, DeafBlind, or Deaf with additional disabilities.

This year's program also featured two special LitFest celebrations in partnership with LitWorld, inspired by its internationally recognized 7 Strengths Framework.

In March, families explored the theme of “Courage”, reflecting on poetry by Naomi Shihab Nye and Langston Hughes while sharing personal stories about finding their voices, overcoming challenges, and advocating for their children. The conversations reminded us that every family's journey deserves an opportunity to be shared in the community.

Our final LitFest in June focused on “Belonging”. Families reflected on what it meant to belong to a family, a culture, and a community. Before reuniting with their children, each parent placed their photo on a bulletin board that read simply:

"You Belong Here."

And, that’s the spirit of the entire program.

Every participating family rated the educational sessions as excellent and relevant in helping support their child.

One parent shared that Empowerment Saturday was,

"Convenient for parents that work during the week. Very informative and fun to learn."

What began as a pilot program during the 2023–2024 school year, made possible through the generosity of the Partners in Hearing Foundation, has continued to grow thanks to additional support from Assemblymember Phara Souffrant Forrest and Assemblymember Robert Carroll. Because of their investment, Empowerment Saturday was offered monthly throughout the 2025–2026 school year.

As we look ahead, our goal is to expand the program even further by offering it twice each month, creating even more opportunities for families to learn and grow together.

Empowerment Saturday is a reminder that education extends beyond the classroom and that when families are supported, our entire community grows stronger.
