Co-Pastor Search Team to Nominate Josh Modrzynski on August 2nd
It took a whole year, but now they’re ready. The Co-Pastor Search Team we elected a year ago now has a candidate, Josh Modrzynski, to present to the congregation this Sunday, August 2nd, after worship.

Our team was led by Larry Moffett, who for many years worked with the presbytery to enable other churches in their pastoral searches. His experience was invaluable to our team. He was well partnered with Susan Andrews, Lynne Chambers, Jimmy Cooke, Robin Edwards, Taylor Greene, Erin Heitman, and Barbi Partlow. They now know each other very well! And they are excited to present Josh to the congregation as Co-Pastor.

This past Sunday, Josh told his own congregation about his sense of calling here, even as we named him to our congregation, and passed out the first bit of information about him, his family, his pastoral experience, etc. There will be much more coming, along with the Co-Pastor Search Team testifying themselves about why they have sensed that Josh is the one God is calling here.

Obviously, with the Coronavirus restrictions, this will be an unusual format for a congregational meeting. We are working on details now for how those livestreaming the service from home can best join in, and we will communicate those plans to you next week.

By the way – as a reminder – Keith is not retiring now from his pastoral roles. The intention is for the two to serve for a year as Co-Pastors before Keith retires. And then Keith and Sarah plan to continue living where they do now. So they will be around.

Please be in prayer! We believe God has been guiding, and we want his hand to be apparent in this big step.
The Modrzynskis
Many pastors come with families, as does Josh. His wife, Rebecca, is also a pastor, and serves as the Coordinator for Healing Prayer with PRMI. That’s a ministry which has resourced St. Giles for years, and whose leader, Brad Long, has been here a number of times to teach. Brad and Laura Long are Rebecca’s parents.

Josh and Rebecca will arrive with Addie and Patrick, rising fourth and first graders. Of course they will be navigating new schools in this strange Covid-19 school year. So prayers are appreciated for that, along with prayers for their house search.

Here is a link to the flyer we passed out in worship this past Sunday that tells more about the Modrzynskis. Both Josh and Rebecca are musicians and worship leaders. And - this is important for our habit formation - you pronounce their name by ignoring the Z – muh-drin’-ski.

Should you want to know more about the setting for Josh’s ministry for the last few years, you can go to this link for the Riceville Community Church: https://www.ricevillevalleycc.org . There is a link there to videos of their worship services, with Josh preaching.

Should the congregation and the presbytery approve Josh, he will begin as Co-Pastor here on September 16th.
How the Congregational
Meeting Will Work
We’re adapting almost everything we do as a church these days to the strictures of the Covid-19 protocols. That includes our Congregational Meeting after worship.

Here’s how it will work:

  • A few minutes after worship concludes, we will convene as a Congregational Meeting. All are welcome, but only Covenant Partners will be voting.

  • If you have not been to worship yet in our Covid-19 season, you can see the protocols for coming just below in our Sunday Morning Worship Plan description (masks, distancing, etc).

  • Because a number of our St. Giles folks are joining us by livestream these days as a means of being cautious, we are adapting the usual protocol for a Congregational Meeting – i.e., that you must be present in order to vote. Those present will vote by paper ballot. Covenant Partners joining us remotely will be able to vote by livestream chat, texting, or by an email. Those means will be described on the screen at the time of the vote.

  • Here is the basic flow of business for the meeting: Co-Pastor Search Team members will each tell why they believe Josh is the one God has brought to the fore; we will present a video which Josh is preparing; we will hear about the terms of call (his pay); we will have questions and answers; we will vote; we will have a few minutes pause while we count the votes; and we will dismiss the Co-Pastor Search Team.

  • One more note on the terms of call: These are part of the larger church budget approved by the Session, and are presented for your information. We will hand out printed copies to those present, but for those at home we will refer to this only verbally, as we are not announcing salary amounts, etc, online. Know that as Co-Pastors Josh and Keith will be paid the same.
Welcome to Our New Members
Michael and Maria Thomas have joined with us now after being among us for some months. She is a native of Bermuda and he is a Navy vet. She’s now working at Lowe’s, and he has begun chaplaincy work at VCU Hospital.
They have a young adult son, J.T., and daughter, Tiara. Welcome!

Our Sunday Morning
Worship Plan Continues
As Virginia has now entered Phase 3 of re-openings, our basic plans for in-house worship continue. These plans enable us to partner with the larger community to slow the spread of the virus, and to keep our St. Giles folks safe.

Livestream will continue! So whether you are in the church or at home, you may continue to join us.

Here’s what we’re doing:

  • We will have a single service at 10:30 in the sanctuary, and we will continue livestreaming worship.

  • We will ask anyone with Covid-19 symptoms or recent exposure not to come.

  • We will have children will sit with their families.

  • We will sit only in every other pew, individually or by family.

  • We will wear masks. (We have some masks for those without their own.)

  • We will visit outside after worship, with safe distancing.

  • We will celebrate communion with various protections in place.

  • That visiting after worship will be outside, and with safe distancing.

Please let us know if you have been diagnosed with COVID-19 so that we may reach out to you.
Highlights of the Session Meeting
The Session met on July 27. Here are some highlights of their actions:

  • They received Michael and Maria Thomas as Covenant Partners.

  • They reviewed St Giles’ partnership in various ongoing racial reconciliation efforts.

  • They reviewed efforts to keep in touch with those most home bound by the coronavirus strictures.

  • They approved terms of call for the new Co-Pastor.

  • They made provisions for how we can have a congregational meeting with our Covid-19 protocols in place.

  • They approved plans for the Spirit Empowered Ministry Team to continue exploring and enabling those interested in the spiritual gifting of prophecy to be part of a new Life Group.

  • They approved the preschool opening in the fall, making use of the state’s protocols for preschools, with which they experimented for two weeks this month.

Thanks, Skip! If you’d like a copy, just call the church office, and we’ll get word to Skip.

Livestreaming Bible Study and Worship

One of our newer ministries is livestreaming our worship services and some of our classes. If you’d like to check it out, use this link to our YouTube channel. We’re doing it simply - no fancy sound or cameras - but it works to bring you the basics. If you don’t click on during the actual live stream hours, Sundays at 9:30 or 11:00, know that the videos are saved on our YouTube channel page, along with Pastor Keith’s video blogs. Find us at:  http://bit.ly/StGilesYouTube
