While it is important to evolve, always striving to create a better version of our self, humans can seem obsessed with reaching illusive perfection in their quest to finally achieve happiness.

Through time and experience we learn that this pursuit is elusive at best.  Due to the impermanent nature of everything around us, the moment we feel we have achieved perfection, a variable such as time occurs and we again feel set back, with perfection just tantalizingly out of reach.

In our yoga and meditation practice, as our senses open we can become hypersensitive to the world around us, which is a part of mindfulness.  While being mindful allows us to soak in so much more beauty that is usually overlooked, it can sometimes feel like a curse because you begin to notice even more imperfections as well.

If you picked the most perfect looking flower and concentrated on it long enough, you would begin to notice not just it's beauty but subtle imperfections in its pedals.  It is in learning to accept and in fact embrace these imperfections that true lasting happiness occurs.

Ancient civilizations from Egyptians, Persians and even the Native American Navajo recognized the implicit imperfection of humans.  They would intentionally include imperfections in their crafts and works of art.  Many cultures believed that only God is able to make something that is perfect. Only God is perfect.

As a way to embrace and honor this natural imperfection they purposely displayed an imperfection in their works.  The Navajo people, for example consciously wove imperfections into their rugs and blankets. They called the line of imperfection the "spirit path." They believed that when they died, their spirit could escape through this line.

Recognizing inherent imperfections and being ok with them (santosha) is a valuable lesson we can all learn through our practice.

See you on the mat!
