20 Iyyar 5783

35th Day of the Omer (after sundown)

A Message from Rabbi Wexler

This week’s double Torah portion, Behar-Behukotai, offers a sense of hope as God promises the Israelites that one day:

וְנָתַתִּ֤י שָׁלוֹם֙ בָּאָ֔רֶץ וּשְׁכַבְתֶּ֖ם וְאֵ֣ין מַחֲרִ֑יד- I will grant peace in the land (of Israel), and you will be able to lie down, and none will make you afraid (Leviticus 26:6).

How we yearn for such a day, especially today, as we watch from afar with bated breath as rockets continue to rain down in Israel. Thus far, over 500 missiles have been fired from Gaza towards Southern Israel and the Tel Aviv area. One rocket recently hit an apartment building in Rehovot (south of Tel Aviv), killing one person and injuring several more. First and foremost, we pray for the safety and well-being of our brothers and sisters in Israel. May there be a quick end to the violence, and may God protect the members of the IDF who are hard at work to keep Israelis safe. We also pray for all of the innocent civilians, Israelis and Palestinians alike, who find themselves in harms way. We are far from the peace that our Torah portion dreams of and that we have sought for generation after generation.

A Message from Executive Director, Ron Safier

This coming Tuesday, May 16, at 6:45pm we will be conducting a congregational security drill on responding to an active shooter event. It is very important to have a plan in place for worst case scenarios, and to conduct drills to practice those plans. We recently conducted Run/Hide/Fight active shooter drills with faculty, staff, and clergy, and it is time once again to practice these drills with the congregation at large. So, whether you are a Shabbat “regular,” or only attend services occasionally, we highly encourage and recommend that you attend this drill which will last approximately one hour. The training will be held in the main sanctuary, and the drills will be conducted by the JFED Security team. This training is open to the entire congregation, and we are hoping to get as many attendees as possible.

As we are nearing the end of the current fiscal year, which runs from July 1 to June 30, we prepare for membership renewal for the coming year, as membership and dues at TBS are renewed on a yearly basis. So, please keep an eye out for an email the week of May 15th with information regarding the membership renewal process for 2023/2024 (5784), including a link that will allow you to submit your membership renewal electronically. There will also be hard copies available of the membership renewal packet for those who prefer a hard copy. Our synagogue is in strong financial shape, and we wouldn’t be where we are today, and we wouldn’t be able to offer all the programming that we do, without our congregational membership and your contributions.
