Finding the Right Rhythm

A message from Fr. John Spicer, Rector

This Sunday, we’ll officially kick off the fall season at church with our Parish Picnic and Ministry Fair following the 10:15 a.m. service. We’ll gather at HJ’s, inside and out, to connect with friends old and new, enjoy a hotdog or brat, and find out more about the many ways to get involved at St. Andrew’s.

Even if we don’t have kids in school, fall is a time to tap our roots—maybe remembering who we are, maybe seeing the hopes and possibilities that lie ahead. School represents that for us, whether it’s the excitement of a new school year or returning to the alma mater for homecoming (or just enjoying college football again … especially, this Saturday, a certain renewed rivalry close to many of our hearts).

So, a highlight of our Rooted in the Rhythm season this year will be a five-week learning opportunity on Thursday nights, Creating My Spiritual-Growth Plan. We’ll use a practical guide from the Society of St. John the Evangelist, an Episcopal religious order—and you can pick up a free copy of the booklet at church this Sunday. From Sept. 11 through Oct. 9, 6 to 7:15 p.m. at HJ’s and online, we’ll explore what we mean by a spiritual life; where our relationships stand with God, with others, and with ourselves; and how might use our time, gifts, and skills in an intentional rhythm of day-to-day life in right relationship.

The first session, this Thursday, Sept. 11, will be led by the Rev. Lisa Senuta, canon for spiritual life in our neighboring Diocese of Kansas. Mtr. Lisa, a spiritual director and retreat leader, will discuss how we can grow in our values and faith through self-awareness, study, prayer, action, and relationships, leading to new self-awareness. From there, Mtr. Jean, Mtr. Rita, Deacon Adam, and I will lead us the following weeks to explore how to build our own plans.

But first—see you at the picnic on Sunday!

A Season to Reconnect with What Matters Most

As the school year begins and familiar routines return, we’re invited to pause and ask a deeper question: How can I connect in the rhythm of daily life? When our calendars fill and schedules pick up, it’s easy to move from task to task without noticing the sacred woven throughout our days. But what if our routines—those ordinary moments of planning, working, caregiving, and gathering—could become a source of spiritual grounding?

This fall, St. Andrew’s invites you to embrace the season through our theme, Rooted in the Rhythm—a call to deepen your connection with God, with others, and with the practices that sustain your faith. We believe God is present not only in life’s big moments, but also in school drop-offs, quiet mornings, shared meals, and acts of service.

Throughout the season, we’ll come together for community gatherings like our All-Parish Picnic and Ministry Fair tomorrow, explore faith through Thursday night classes like Creating My Spiritual Growth Plan, and find new ways to live with purpose and intention.

Wherever this season takes you, may your daily rhythm become a place of holy connection and grace. Come grow with us as we become more rooted in the presence of God and in the sacred rhythms of everyday life.

Create Your Plan for Spiritual Growth

This season of being Rooted in the Rhythm is a great time to set your rhythm for spiritual growth. Join us Thursday nights from Sept. 11 through Oct. 9 for a learning opportunity – Creating My Spiritual-Growth Plan. The clergy will lead us in exploring our individual relationships with God, with others, and with ourselves, as well our use of the gifts and skills God has given us. You’ll come out of the class with a practical plan for your daily journey with the Source of life and love. We’ll gather at HJ’s from 6 to 7:15 p.m. – come a few minutes early, and bring a snack or drink to share. The class also will be offered online. Just go to the website to access the Zoom link for the class.

Life at St. Andrew's

Vestry Nominations Open

It’s time for nominations for the new Vestry class, which will begin serving in January 2026. Past senior warden Bill Aliber is leading the Vestry Nominating Committee, which also includes parishioners Scott Burditt, Carolyn Lathrop, Cate Duerst, and Victoria Launder. If you sense God calling you, or someone you know, to serve on our governing board, please complete a nomination form, available in the Jewell Room or by email from Mary Sanders (mary@standrewkc.org). Please return completed nominations to the box in the Jewell Room, or to Mary Sanders, by Monday, Sept. 29.

Ride Ministry at St. Andrew’s

Thanks to a generous estate gift from parishioner Tina Norton, we’re beginning a Ride Ministry to help parishioners get to worship, church events, and even medical appointments. We’ll be partnering with Lyft to provide rides at no cost to you. To request a ride, email rides@standrewkc.org (or call the church office if email is a challenge) with your name, number, pickup location, destination, and times. Mtr. Rita Kendagor and Brittany Conge will coordinate your ride.

Can't make it to church this Sunday? Remember that St. Andrew's broadcasts each worship service to our website, our YouTube Channel, and our Facebook page. You can also catch the sermon the following day on our social media channels. Check out our Linktree for your preferred way to connect with worship: http://linktr.ee/standrewskc.

Jesus With You . . . at Home

If you're worshipping at home, you can pick up consecrated wafers to use during our celebrations of Holy Eucharist. They're available in a basket in the narthex, or from the office, anytime the church is open. If getting out is a challenge, we'll be happy to deliver wafers to you. Just contact Mary Sanders (by email or at 816-523-602, ext. 110) about arranging delivery.

If you need help connecting to St. Andrew’s Online to participate in worship opportunities, but your computer is giving you trouble, just contact Deacon Adam James or 816-352-2742 for assistance.

Hearing-Assist Devices

You may have noticed a stand of headphones as you come in from the porte-cochere on Sundays. These are hearing-assist devices that amplify the sound system during worship. If you would like to use one, just pick it up as you come in!

The Good Book Club: Faithful Living

Through Oct. 17, we’ll read four letters from St. Paul to Christian communities he founded (although one letter may have been written by a later follower of Paul). These works—1 Thessalonians, Galatians, Philippians, and Colossians—let us overhear one side of Paul’s multifaceted conversations with people he gathered in Christ. Paul cajoles, berates, and inspires his congregations as he tries to guide them, and us, in the theology and daily practice of following the way of Jesus. Each day, you’ll get a text or email with a brief summary of the daily reading, along with a link to that day’s verses. To sign up for the Good Book Club, just email Fr. John (frjohn@standrewkc.org).

Friday at 12 p.m. – Noon Eucharist – Watch here

Sunday at 8 a.m. – Rite I Holy Eucharist – Watch here

For those who find spiritual comfort and strength in the rich Elizabethan language of centuries-old worship, our early-morning service of prayer, Scripture, a sermon, a musical solo, and time-honored hymns, is the perfect way to start your Sabbath.

Sunday at 10:15 a.m. – Rite II Holy Eucharist – Watch here

Worship the Lord in the beauty of Scripture, a sermon, and prayers for ourselves and our world. Glorious hymns, organ, and choral music intertwine with the spoken parts of our celebration. We offer online Children’s Chapel via Zoom before 10 a.m.; and in-person Sunday school during the 10 a.m. service.

Daily at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m – Pray at 8

Join us in the Pray at 8 Facebook group. In just 10 to 15 minutes, you can stop, breathe, and find God’s refreshment to support you through your day or carry you on to bed. It’s a beautiful way to remember that God is our constant helper and strength.
