Two On-site Components of the Sewer Project

 Are Taking Place

Soil Borings Are Being Collected

As part of the preliminary engineering work for the sewer district, Square Engineering has contracted with NW Contracting from Alden, NY to perform soil borings in various intervals throughout the sewer district. Soil boring is a technique used to survey soil by taking several shallow cores out of the sediment through the use of a drilling rig. The process for subsurface drilling includes drilling several cores that are removed from the sediment that are then placed in small individual containers and labeled as to the specific location where the sample was taken. The soil samples are essential to understanding the various soil conditions in the district so that the engineers can develop an effective plan of action for running sewer lines.

Steven Gingrich, lead driller, and Nathan Gingrich, driller, from NW Contracting are guiding the subsurface investigation process and have identified and marked all of the locations for securing the samples. They began collecting samples this week but cannot finish the work until the underground utilities have been cleared. They plan to return to Findley Lake in a week or two to finish the soil borings.

After the soil samples have been collected, a NW Contracting geologist will analyze them and provide a soil description for each of the samples. This profile will assist the engineers in designing a system that takes into consideration the composition of the soil in various locations to assure that the sewer lines will be supported appropriately and will be structurally sound.

Topographical Information Is Being Gathered For Each Property

Square Engineering has contracted with Costich Engineering from Rochester, NY to gather topographical information on each property that is included in the Findley Lake Sanitary Sewer District. When developing a topographical report, a land surveyor gathers data about a property’s structures, natural features (such as trees), and terrain. The primary purpose of this topographical survey is to measure the slope from the bottom of the property’s (ground floor) external door to the lawn/yard. The amount of the slope will determine if a grinder pump is needed.

Greg Robinson, Senior Field Surveyor, and Tom Krochmalech, Field Surveyor, have completed measuring all of the residences/applicable structures on Sunnyside Road and are currently working on Shadyside. Other crew members from Costich will be completing Shadyside Road and the remainder of the sewer district over the next two to three weeks.

The field surveyors use a global positioning system (GPS) where a base station is mounted on a tripod with a receiver and radio sender. Each surveyor carries an instrument that records GPS data and sends it to the base station. Once the data has been gathered and recorded, it is downloaded into mapping software. The mapping software will be used by Square Engineering as they meet with each property owner and discuss the topography of their property and a plan to hook into the sewer main.

The field surveyors wear orange jackets or vests and will not be entering any residence. However, they do need to come onto each person’s property to physically measure the distance from the door sill to the ground.

If you have not already provided the town clerk with your contact information (email and/or phone number), please do so as soon as possible (townclerk@townofmina.org or 716-769-7204 office). Square Engineering would like to begin scheduling individual appointments with property owners to develop individualizeds plan for hooking into the system.

If you should have any questions or concerns about any aspect of the project, reach out to Rebecca Brumagin, Mina Town Supervisor at supervisor@townofmina.org or 716-969-7757 (cell).
