MEANDERING, FORAGING AND BRINGING THE PAST INTO THE PRESENT

Written for The Tapestry by Destiny Kinal

It has been observed that when a new people immigrate into another stable population that the disturbance may take as much as 1000 years to settle down.  If the disturbance of 1492 marks the entry of white people to this continent, we should be seeing the beginnings of the disturbance smoothing out.

What would that look like?

The earliest settlers on this continent, the French and Dutch for  instance, married into Native families, naturally.  Their children,  metis (or mixed bloods,) may have represented our continent’s best way to smooth the disturbance.  When a later and perhaps more straight-laced wave of immigrants, like  the English and Germans arrived with their wives, the evidence of this earlier comity was erased.  My friend of Dutch ancestry (her family owned property in early Manhattan) says that the photo of her great great grandmother—clearly a Native woman—was minimized.  It served this new wave of immigrants to style the Native People “savages” (even though most Native People spoke several languages including European tongues as well) to justify a land grab.

In the Penn-York Valley of the Susquehanna where my husband and I spent 35 years, companionable  relations between the Native People and settlers became untenable when George Washington sent troops to invade.  The matrilineal Queen Catherine and her sister Queen Esther fled to Canada, their homes, crops and orchards in flames behind them, just at harvest time.

Native Americans gradually lost their homelands to unscrupulous realtors like the Dutch East India Trading Company.  Native Americans have no tolerance for alcohol and --after the loss of Buffalo Creek--could be found drunk in the streets of my hometown Buffalo, for instance. The prophet Handsome Lake (1735-1859), half brother to Cornplanter--after a lifetime of alcoholism and poverty--espoused the Longhouse Religion based on the Code of Handsome Lake,  which restored traditional practices.

This brings up the practice of sustainability, citing again Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Honorable Harvest outlined in her “Braiding Sweet Grass.”

When harvesting from nature, don’t pick the first you see.  Ask permission. Don’t take everything.  Give thanks.

Why am I telling you this, now?  We have been told that Native People understand that you can’t take everything in your foraging harvest.  Are we getting over our instinct to use it all up if we can?  A friend of mine is reducing his walleye take from 100/year to 70/year; he supplies many households.

When my cousins’s patrilineal search for our ancestors was coming up with a dead end, we found what we longed for in a box in Olean, in the attic of the daughter of the daughter of the daughter of the original immigrant family.  This gave my cousin the meat he needed to continue his research in a productive way: our family’s photo albums, letters exchanged between parents and their grown children across different continents, the family Bible with inscriptions on births and deaths.

Always the novelist, I found a brochure describing the “crime”  of the Allegheny River running free, the water power that it could yield being “wasted” by an undammed river. Pymatuning Dam was built and ancient villages—where Handsome Lake and Cornplanter’s People practiced their traditional ways—were buried under water.

Today, dams are being decommissioned and taken down, rivers allowed to run free once again (with some restrictions against extreme flooding).  Perhaps the remains of Handsome Lake’s villages and Cornplanters Grant will surface again, and be restored to the Seneca, part of their sacred lands.

I usually close with a recipe but what wild crop do I forage at this time of year that is greater than the blackberry?

Humans and bears share a love for this wiid berry, common from coast to coast, to bring delight to our winter tables.  I don’t even have to offer a recipe, as you all have your own.  (My experiments with reducing the ratio of sugar to berries is a success, I think, but ask my sister: she prefers my preserves sweeter.). Increasingly, I am using maple syrup to sweeten, though my husband feeds the hummingbirds a solution with sugar.

Destiny will be writing a column for The Tapestry. Destiny lives part of the year on her famly homestead outside of Findley Lake and the other part in the San Francisco Bay area. Her most recent work The Textile Trilogy of novels tells the true story of how our suffragist foremothers were influenced by their Seneca and Haudenosaunee neighbors, a matrilineal way-of-life where men and women have always shared power.
