Findley Lake Community Foundation

pursues proactive path

The Findley Lake Community Foundation has played a significant role in the community’s quality of life since its inception 23 years ago, but believes it can and should do more moving forward.

The foundation, which has distributed grants to local nonprofits and the Town of Mina since its formation as the “Quality Findley Fund” in December 1999, has moved in recent months toward a more proactive model that includes collaborating with community groups and the Mina Town Board to identify and pursue local priorities.

Early efforts have included contracting with a consultant to help structure that collaboration, and with a communications professional to ensure information about those efforts reach as many Findley Lake-area residents and seasonal visitors as possible. Re-establishing the former “Tapestry” newsletter in an electronic, on-line form is one of the early results of the foundation’s new direction.

“I believe the future direction of the FLCF is to be a collaborative voice in the community,” said foundation board president Jeff Stohr. “This means we need to be aware of the community’s needs and vision, and to share this with all the stakeholders.”

Stohr, a resident of Rocky River, Ohio, west of Cleveland, has been a seasonal visitor to Findley Lake since his parents, Lynn and Al Stohr, purchased their first cottage some 50 years ago when Jeff was 9 years old.

“I remember the most exciting part of the entire purchase was the cottage came with an aluminum fishing boat with a 9.9 horsepower Evinrude engine,” Stohr recalled. “From that moment forward, Findley Lake became our home away from home.”

That Woodland Shores cottage has been transformed over the years from a 900-square-foot, two-bedroom structure to a four-bedroom family destination that accommodated three families. Further cementing his Findley Lake connection, Stohr, his wife, Karen, and her parents, Carol and Hayes Jenkins, almost eight years ago purchased the Sally and Herkie Porter residence just two properties away from his parents.

“To say Findley Lake is in our family is an understatement,” he said.

It’s that passion for Findley Lake that led Stohr earlier this year to also follow his father’s footsteps onto the FLCF board of directors. Subsequent to taking his father’s seat on the board, he was asked by board president Dave Bartrum to consider taking over as president.

“My response was as long as Dave and the other members of the FLCF board continued to serve and help us carry the momentum forward, I would accept,” which he did with the board’s approval in November.

Other members of the FLCF board include vice president Larry Gross, secretary/treasurer Rebecca Brumagin, Bartrum, Steven Denny, Nancy Roche, Charles Schneider, Christopher Sorce, and Dr. Elizabeth Wise.

Stohr said one component of the FLCF taking on a more visible and active role is helping the community understand what the foundation is and does, topics that will be addressed in future editions of Tapestry.

“From my observations, the organization has quietly helped raise funds and shared in small to medium sized projects over the years,” he said. “Unfortunately, too few residents know what the FLCF has been involved with, and that is about to change.”

Stohr noted the foundation in recent months has provided funding to the Town of Mina to contract with consultant Steve Bishop, who is assisting with the organizational aspects of moving the foundation board forward. The foundation through the Town Board is also funding the work of communications specialist Robin Gross, who is spearheading the Tapestry effort and building a database of residents and businesses to enhance future communications.

Stohr said his family “is generationally committed to making Findley Lake our destination of choice.”

“Knowing that my parents, my brother Trevor’s family and my entire family love Findley Lake, I want to put my time, energy and money behind making our community the best year-round destination it can be for all permanent and seasonal residents and guests,” he said.

While talking about the "Coolest Little Town Around" we all know the lake is "cool", our town is "cool", but a Pine Junction concert is another level of "cool"! A Concert in the Lost in the Pines Event Center at Pine Junction is a big town event with a local town vibe!

A Little History on Pine Junction

Pine Junction first opened their doors in January, 2006. The restaurant started out as a one room bar and tavern with a simple menu, cold beer and friendly staff! The owners have always made PJ feel like home and want their customers to leave as friends. Originally opening in the winter months to cater to the Snowmobile crowd, Pine Junction quickly became a favorite stop on the Chautauqua County trails. With friendships forming and word of mouth spreading about the Tavern in the Pines, they quickly were able to grow and expand.

Owners Lonnie and Shirlee Pound have made Pine Junction a destination and priority stop when in the area. Customers coming all the way from Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Buffalo regularly for dinner plus we can’t forget to mention the locals that support us year round! Findley Lake as a whole, is a great place to be in the summer from the cozy lake atmosphere to the great shops and local stops for food, beer and ice-cream.

With the constant support, Pine Junction has grown into so much more than just a restaurant in the last 17 years. General Manager, Michelle, has made Pine Junction a top venue in the area for Weddings and Private Events! With the newest addition of the timber-framed pavilion, Pine Junction has been able to add even more events to their busy summer schedule. “Lost in the Pines Event Center” has been able to host national bands such as The Allman Betts Band, The Outlaws and coming this summer The Marshall Tucker Band and a few other secrets we have but shhhhh Don’t Tell Shirlee! We still love to host local bands as we are able, and other events like Drafts & Crafts and benefits to support local causes.

Next time you are in Findley Lake take a drive up the hill and get lost in the pines! Remember… Part of the fun is trying to find us! Find us on Facebook or check out our website www.pinejunctiontavern.com for more information on Events.
