Findley Lake Community Foundation

quietly funds community progress

Quick … Name the Findley Lake organization that since 1999 has donated $275,000 to dozens of local organizations and community projects.

You’re not alone if you don’t know the answer, as the Findley Lake Community Foundation is likely one of the region’s best-kept “public secrets,” quietly going about the business of enhancing the Town of Mina’s quality of life for nearly a quarter-century.

Flying under the radar wasn’t an intentional decision, just the nature of an organization designed to gather donations from full-time and seasonal residents over time and distribute grants to nonprofit organizations with a need.

Established originally as the “Quality Findley Fund” under the auspices of the Erie (Pa.) Community Foundation, the local initiative still lives under the ECF’s umbrella and helps the community fund everything from library computers and nature trail development to the lake’s weed harvesting and mobile radios for the fire department.

Town Supervisor Rebecca Brumagin has served on the foundation’s board of trustees since the beginning. She said the foundation sprang from planning for the town’s 175-year celebration, when the idea arose to build a water wheel at the site of the original mill at the head of lake as a new downtown landmark and logo for the anniversary.

“Rev. Lewis Evans and I were in charge of fundraising for the water wheel,” Brumagin recalled. “He and I approached Bruce Kern about making a donation to the project, at which time Bruce said something like rather than approaching various people about various projects, he felt we should consider establishing a fund to provide support for various community projects.

“Lew and I agreed and that is when the fund started,” she said. “Additionally, at that time weeds in the lake were a huge problem and the Findley Lake Property Owners Association (now the Findley Lake Watershed Foundation) paid for a firm to bring in a weed harvester for one week out of the year. It was the desire of many of the Quality Findley Fund members to expand weed harvesting, and address lake quality issues along with other community projects such as funding the water wheel.”

The foundation’s original members were a combination of full-time and seasonal residents in Brumagin, Kern, Ed Bolt, Tom Roche, Arthur Cooper, Ronald Jones, Donna Beth Luce, Louis Passmore, and Carolyn Patton.

Several of those original board members and others from the community committed start-up funds to the organization. Through 2022, upwards of 150 individuals and couples have contributed $467,750 to the foundation, of which some $275,000 has been distributed to a host of local nonprofits and the Town of Mina. Factoring in investment gains through the years of nearly $193,000, the foundation’s 2022 year-end balance stood at more than $385,000.

The board of trustees meets quarterly to conduct business and address any pending grant applications, which are available to tax-exempt nonprofit organizations from Brumagin. She noted the foundation does not have a set annual distribution target, but rather “will decide on an annual basis the amount we want to distribute.”

Organizations that have benefited the most from this community philanthropy, and funding they’ve received through July 2022, include the Alexander Findley Community Library ($45,724); Community Connections at Findley Lake ($17,541); the Findley Lake and Mina Historical Society ($11,500); the Findley Lake Nature Trails Network ($40,674); the Findley Lake Volunteer Fire Department ($5,938); the Findley Lake Watershed Foundation for weed harvesting, dam engineering and repair, and a flagpole project ($120,250); and the Town of Mina Recreation Committee ($17,759).

“Funding for these projects by the foundation has allowed each of these nonprofits to provide a level of service that may not have been able to be supported through other means,” Brumagin noted.

While those nonprofits have certainly become aware of the Findley Lake Community Foundation, because their board members often change, Brumagin said she regularly reminds them of the foundation’s willingness to support projects.

As for the foundation trustees’ recent decision that the foundation should become a more proactive collaborator to move the community’s development forward – including reestablishing The Tapestry as a community communication tool – Brumagin said it’s an important change.

“I think this is a monumental shift in focus for the foundation and I applaud the board for desiring to fund projects that are transformational in nature and will benefit the community for years to come,” she said. “It is an exciting time for me to be on the Findley Lake Community Foundation board.”

Current foundation trustees include Brumagin, Jeff Stohr, Larry Gross,

Dave Bartrum, Steve Denny, Nancy Roche, Charles Schneider,

Christopher Sorce, and Dr. Elizabeth Wise.
