In recent days, the evangelical community was rocked with news of a very prominent pastor and well-published Bible teacher being removed from the pulpit of his church for an “inappropriate relationship” with a woman not his wife. This man is a mere year older than I am, which means that he is as keenly aware of this truth as I am – e.g., we are both much closer to the finish line than we are the starting line. And here’s another sobering truth of which I am aware: You are always better remembered for how you finished than how you started.
Paul’s encouragement to the church in Galatia as regards their work in the Gospel is that there is a certain reward – a tangible and clear benefit – when one finishes well the assignment before them. There is effort that must be expended. It is not lost effort, but you have to finish!
We at Daybreak are keenly aware of that fact. Many thought the battle for the lives of unborn children in our country was almost won when Roe v. Wade was overturned on June 24, 2022. Now, of course, we know it most certainly was and is not. If anything, the “finish line” on that battle feels even further away with one of our current presidential candidates talking about her commitment to make abortion a constitutionally protected right if she is elected. Our opposition is committed, and we must be equally, if not more so, committed to finish this fight well.
