Get ready to do your holiday shopping at the farmers' market tomorrow during our Silent Auction and Raffle!  We have AMAZING items from the best local businesses that would make perfect holiday gifts (or just something special for you!).

For the raffle portion of our event, we have gift certificates from some of our favorite local restaurants, including  MotorcoPompieri Pizza, Bull City  Burger & BreweryHeirloom Restaurant (Roxboro) and more. The chefs at those restaurants shop at the market and use as many local products on their menus as possible. Our raffle will also include gifts from our very own farmers' market vendors! There will be beautiful crafts and gift certificates for cheese, chips and salsa, and even a jar of strawberry jam that won first place at the 2018 State Fair! Raffle tickets will be $1 each or 7 tickets for $5.

The Silent Auction portion of our fundraiser begins at 8:00 am on the lawn. There are some incredible items to bid on that will make thoughtful holiday gifts for your loved ones! Below is a list of the items available and the closing times for bidding.

Why are we having a silent auction? You may not know that the market operates primarily off of the weekly stall fees from our farmers and artisans. Despite this modest budget, we are constantly working to make fresh and healthy food accessible to our entire Durham community. We want to continue expanding the offerings of our market and need your help to make this happen. All of the money raised from this event will go toward market programs you love, such as the Sprouts Kid's Club, the Double Bucks Program, cooking demos, and much, much more!

Finally, as a reminder, the  Saturday Main Season Market runs through November 17. We'll host our annual  Pre-Thanksgiving Holiday Market  on Tuesday, November 20 from 3:00-5:00 pm. The
Saturday Winter Market  will begin on December 1 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm. That's a lot of dates to remember!

What's for Dinner?
Farmers' Market Fall Salad
Serves 2-3 people as main or 4-6 as side
Did you enjoy chatting with the team from the  Durham Chapel Hill Dietetic Association last Saturday? In case you missed their delicious demo, check out their seasonal salad recipe below. You'll find everything you need to make this meal at the market tomorrow!

Salad Ingredients
  • 5 cups seasonal greens chopped into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup red cabbage, sliced thin
  • 1 cup sliced apple or pear
  • 1-2 radishes and/or beets, sliced thin
  • 1-2 carrots, sliced thin
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup diced sweet peppers
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 1/4 cup cheese (your choice)
Vinaigrette Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 3 tbsp vinegar or lemon juice
  • 2 tsp honey (optional)
  • 1 tsp Dijon or spicy mustard (optional)
  • 1 tbsp fresh chopped herb

Big beautiful marigold bouquets, yellow and orange, from our greenhouse will again be available this Saturday at the market. Also, stop by and sample our newest Berkshire X pork sausage blend .... fresh from the processor.  

Our natural pastured MEATS will be available...21-day old dry-aged ANGUS BEEF, Berkshire X PORK, Dorset X LAMB, and Boer CHEVON (goat). We will have many cuts to offer our valued customers...Ground, Loin Chops, bags of Soup bones, Roasts, Steaks, Brisket, etc.

SPECIAL this week will be our BEEF SHORT RIBS and Osso BUCCO...delicious cuts for chilly day meals....a real value dish.  

USDA Certified Organic veggies from the greenhouse include: Few zephyr squash and Sungold tomatoes....and pie pumpkins for the coming holidays. Mario's organic POPCORN is a perfect gift for your friends and family. We hope to see you on Saturday at the wonderful farmers' market.

SEEDS will be back at the DFM this week with our youth! We have a healthy supply of winter greens and fresh eggs from this year's pullets. We have been busy expanding our growing space, renovating our chicken coop, making a million different recipes out of mustard greens (so much!), and learning about different cultural traditions for farming and cooking from the around the world and throughout history. Come chat with us and pick up fresh farm produce grown by our youth!

Honeygirl Meadery
Honeygirl Meadery is a small urban meadery in downtown Durham, making an ancient craft beverage for modern days. Mead is essentially wine made from honey, with many different styles that include additions of fruits, flowers and herbs. Our meads are hand-crafted libations made in small batches, using both local and global true source honey, local fruits, herbs and flowers. They are naturally gluten free. Our downtown Durham Tasting Room is open on Fridays from 3-7 pm, Saturdays from 1-6 pm and Sundays from 1-5 pm.

This week we will be sampling: our latest release of Fig Orange Mead, a semi-sweet mead delightfully nuanced with caramelized honey, and fresh fig notes. Made with local, roasted celeste and brown turkey figs, NC wildflower honey, and orange blossom honey.

We will also be sampling our Apple Cyser Mead , this is the mead version of a hard cider, and ours is a dry-style cyser with crisp, tart apple highlights. A blend of four apple varieties from western NC contributes both tart and sweet cider notes.

And we will also be sampling our Spiced Apple Cyser Mead, like apple pie in a glass. Made from NC apple cider fermented with NC wildflower honey, spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg.

We will also have bottles available of our Strawbanero Mead, a lightly sweet mead with fresh strawberries and a spicy kick; and our Mango Habanero Mead, made with clover honey, mangos and infused with spicy habanero peppers .

We're excited that Calvander and Danziger were chosen as finalists in the Good Food Awards based in California! We're honored that both were chosen out of all the cheeses submitted. Calvander is similar to an Asiago with a semi firm texture and piquant flavor that adds depth to any dish. Enjoy with red wine, shave onto pizza or salads or grate for quiche, pasta, or polenta dishes. We are now selling an 8 month old Calvander. Danziger is a semi soft washed rind cheese that is a little stronger than our Carolina Moon. Washing the cheese as it ages with one particular culture gives an orange hue to the rind and a slightly funky bite that is balanced with the rich flavor of our Jersey milk. Use as an appetizer or melt over potatoes. 

Other cheeses include fresh Dairyland Farmers, Hickory Grove, and Carolina Moon. Dairyland Farmers is good for snacking or melting in scrambled eggs or tacos. Enjoy Hickory Grove with apples or a grilled cheese sandwich. Carolina Moon is our Camembert style that is creamy with a distinctive mushroom flavor. Great for a gathering of friends or serving with soup.

Our pork is from our whey fed pigs and our sausages are made with the hams for extra meatiness. We'll have Mild and Hot Italian, Sage and Maple links, Bratwurst, a little Polish with mustard and garlic, and our Mexican spiced Chorizo. Cook our sausages on the grill with peppers or add to bread pudding, tacos, or pizza. We will have our bulk mild breakfast next week in time for the Thanksgiving holiday to use for breakfast or for a stuffing. Pick up a copy of our sausage and kale soup recipe for a chilly day. We also have Spare Ribs, Molasses cured Bacon, Smoked Ham Hocks, and Ground Pork. Pick up our flavorful Ground Beef which is a customer favorite to have on hand and enjoy a cheeseburger or homemade chili. It's a good buy at $6.00 per pound. The Spicy Hermit
The Spicy Hermit crafts traditional and seasonal kimchi using fresh produce from local farms (including those at Durham Farmers' Market!) and time-honored fermentation methods. What is kimchi? Simply put, kimchi is a delicious product resulting from seemingly magical alchemy of vegetables and spices. All kimchi from The Spicy Hermit is raw, gluten-free, and vegan, and manufactured at each produce's seasonal peak.  

We'll have green cabbage, butternut squash, and Napa cabbage. Come early to get best selection! Try them as a side dish, like pickles, or as seasoning for dips or sauces or even soups!

We will be at market this Saturday with a variety of fresh pasta! We will have everyone's favorite ravioli, including our seasonal flavor, Pumpkin!  Or pick up  one of our take-and-bake lasagnas for an easy and delicious meal. 

Hurtgen Meadows Farm
This week Hurtgen Meadows will be bringing carrots, green onions, sweet potatoes, watermelon radishes, lettuce, collards, kale, shallots, eggplant, potatoes, bell peppers, sweet lunchbox peppers, hot peppers, fall squash, and garlic.
We'll have fresh eggs from our free-ranging happy chickens that are fed organic grains.
We will have a variety of our award winning jams and jellies, which are made in small batches using local ingredients. Our family has made jams for multiple generations and we are happy to share with our customers.

All of Hurtgen Meadows produce, plants, fruits and flowers are naturally grown using sustainable practices - no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers are ever used on our farm. We'll see you at the market!

My name is Gabriela Kavanaugh and I am owner and roaster for Caballo Rojo Coffee, roasting locally here in Durham. My grandfather was a leading coffee roaster in Venezuela and I wanted to continue this family tradition in my local community. My goal is to create moments involving coffee that connect the international community,  that provides us with coffee, with our our local community. We are excited to be able to foster this vision by being at the Durham Farmers Market, providing you with cups of brewed coffee and bags of whole bean coffee.

We have our annual Sparkling Holiday Jam made with fresh cranberries! Along with Pumpkin Butter, Apple Butter, and a special batch of Low-Sugar Apple Butter. We have a rainbow of colorful sweet peppers, fresh tender okra, and free-range eggs. Get here early for $3 and $1 mums and $5 ornamental pepper pots, as well as a variety of succulents. Jams, pickles, and pepper vinegars make great holiday gifts, and feather earrings too!

I have a wide selection of photographic greeting cards featuring iconic spots around  Durham, the OBX, Flowers, Fantasy, Animals, Whimsy, and astronomical images. If you don't see a subject you are looking for, just ask - I may have it.  This week's image is of a passion flower, of course!

Parking & Street Information
The market is located at 501 Foster Street in the Pavilion at Durham Central Park.  Parking can be found on the street around the market, in the Ballpark Parking Lot on Corporation Street and in the Measurement Inc. lot, 423 Morris Street (look for the Durham Farmers' Market parking sign). There is a path at the bottom of that parking lot that leads you to the market. There are also public parking lots along Foster Street and on Morgan Street near the Carolina Theatre.  

Handicap parking is available on Foster Street, right next to the south entrance of the pavilion.
Durham Farmers' Market Animal Policy
Please note that the Durham Farmers' Market does not allow dogs or other pets in the market area during Market hours.  Service animals are exempt from this rule.

Leashed pets are welcome elsewhere throughout Durham Central Park.
