Why hot training may save firefighter lives


The science of proteins shows that training in the heat may be the best rehab strategy

The discovery of heat and cold shock proteins has given us a look at how the body adjusts to temperature fluctuations. Heat shock proteins are a family of proteins that are produced by cells in response to exposure to stressful conditions.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - As the water raining down from the overhead sprinklers pooled in rivers of blood and the smell of gunpowder hung in the air Wednesday, Ryan Starling remembered his training.
