Fire Department to Begin Operating Second Fire Station May 12
Northville Township’s Fire Station 2, at 40911 Seven Mile Road, officially opens Monday, May 12 at the Essential Services Complex (ESC), bringing life-saving care closer to residents in the northeast quadrant of Northville Township.
The new facility will host half of the Fire Department staff and ensure that the firefighters/paramedics can reach 96.5% of Township residents in less than 6 minutes. This benchmark is a marked improvement over the 51.6% of residents who could be reached in 6 minutes from a single station.
“This is impactful when a resident needs immediate medical attention or a fire breaks out,” notes Township Supervisor Mark J. Abbo. “It will save lives and property.”
High Tech = High Service
Fire Station 2’s new technology allows firefighters to offer better service to the community and protect its assets. A high-speed dryer, for instance, removes water from the hoses they use and their turn-out gear, the heavy fire coats and gear they wear going to a scene. It prevents rot and improves wear and tear, allowing them to use the community’s assets long term and be drier quicker, helping them prepare for the next distress call.
“This is an exciting moment for the Northville Township Fire Department,” said Fire Chief Brent Siegel. “We’ve been thinking about this project for the last 15 years and how it can greatly benefit our residents. The day is here to show our community exactly what we envisioned.”
Northville Township has increased its Fire staff to match the increase of calls for service and in anticipation of opening Fire Station 2, ensuring both locations are fully staffed. Fire Station 1 is off Six Mile Road, across from Northville High School. It debuted in 2004.
Essential Services Complex Progress Continues
Fire Station 2 marks the second of four buildings opened at the 96,000-square-foot ESC. The Police Department migrated to the new facility beginning in late February when Public Safety Officers (Dispatchers), the skilled folks who receive 911 calls, as well as non-emergency calls, for both Northville Township and the City of Northville, first began working there. The rest of the Police Department followed in March and April.
With both Fire and the Police Department located there, the facility becomes the new Public Safety Headquarters for Northville Township. This creates a space to share resources, including a fitness room and a conference/training room.
“This was to contain costs, while creating an environment rich in collaboration,” said Township Manager Glenn Caldwell. “It’s part of our culture here.”
In 2026, the conference/training room will be available for the public’s use when not booked by the first responders. It seats more than 100 people and can be divided into two separate rooms, both with kitchenettes. The Police Department has already hosted multiple training sessions drawing in attendees from around the state.
Combining together the new facilities for Police and Fire, along with the garage, the Public Safety Headquarters is 65,403 square feet.
ESC’s two remaining buildings to come this summer are:
-
A new Department of Public Works Headquarters with nine bays to house the Water & Sewer team and equipment
-
A Northville Parks & Recreation Trailhead Building for Legacy Park complete with restrooms
To celebrate the opening of the completed Fire Station 2 and the Public Safety Headquarters, Northville Township is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the media May 29, which is a little over a year after first breaking ground on the project.
“Fire Station 2 is an important piece in serving our community,” said Supervisor Abbo. “Our mission focuses on delivering exceptional services to enhance the quality of life here in Northville Township. I’m so proud of this project and know it will benefit future generations to come.”
