It's the weedkiller that transformed agriculture, paving the way for farming that is gentler on the land, but now an Australian court is set to determine if glyphosate can cause cancer.

His hens have laid more than a million eggs over the past five years, but a farmer on the New South Wales North Coast has never seen anything quite like this. Fabian Fabbro was collecting eggs at his Woodland Valley Farm recently when he noticed a specimen that looked perfectly round.
Nothing at all to do with olives but who doesn’t love a good chook/egg story!

Run by Hort Innovation, the Strategic Agrichemical Review Process (SARP) provides an updated view of current priorities and gaps regarding pest, disease and weed control for issues specific to our industry.

Webinar: Co-ops 101 for Olive Growers | |
The AOA’s extension program is getting off and running early this year, with an interactive webinar exploring the opportunities provided by co-operative business operations.
Combining learning and discussion, the session will look at how mutuality and co-operation can collectively solve a problem and form foundations for shared ownership among olive growers. It will specifically cover the foundations of ‘what is a co-op’, with case studies shared for inspiration and discussion.
Hosted by the AOA, the webinar will be presented by Clare Fountain from Co-operative Bonds, supported by the Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals (BCCM). Clare has contributed to national co-op development programs Farming Together and Co-operative Farming, and is currently contributing to the Care Together program of the BCCM.

Spanish olive oil prices soar 165% in three years
Spanish olive oil prices rose by 54.6% year-on-year in December 2023, fuelled by drought-impacted harvests and a drop in production, marking a cumulative 165.5% increase in price in three years.

Spain set to eliminate value-added tax on olive oil sales
The Spanish government has announced that olive oil will join the list of staple foods exempt from VAT, which is similar to sales tax, as part of its strategy to curb inflation amid the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
The new measures are set to be fast-tracked into law with no objections expected from opposition parties.

Czech controls find problems with olive oil and meat products
Czech controls on olive oil have found two-thirds of samples were non-compliant. The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (SZPI) focused on the quality of olive oils on the domestic market. Overall, 67 percent of evaluated samples failed to meet the requirements of European legislation.
This is getting really concerning for the reputation of our industry globally.

El Niño decimates Peruvian olive harvest
Officials in Peru anticipate a 90 percent decrease in olive oil production before the 2024 harvest, citing climate extremes attributed to El Niño. Local producers estimate the country will produce between 700 and 1,000 tons of olive oil in 2024, down from 7,000 tons produced in 2023.

Hero Bread reformulates products with olive oil
Low-carb bread brand Hero Bread has reformulated its bread, buns and tortillas to feature olive oil. The olive oil replaces canola oil and seed oil, the company said. Hero Bread said olive oil offers several benefits, including being nutrient dense, heart-healthy and rich in antioxidants, including vitamin E and protective plant compounds.
Their marketing line: “This key ingredient upgrade adds the heart-healthy benefits of olive oil to every bite of Hero and makes our already delicious, better-for-you baked goods even tastier.”
