Safety Topic:
Hazards of Wearing Jewelry while Working
Is your jewelry putting you at risk?
While it might not be top of mind, it is important to remember that wearing jewelry at work can potentially put you in dangerous situations that may cause serious injury.
Jewelry such as necklaces, bracelets, watches and rings can get caught in moving parts of machinery or power tools, causing the loss of limb or finger. There is also a chance that your watch or ring could break off and become projectile when making contact with fast moving pieces of equipment.
Severe burns could also result from jewelry conducting electricity, and accidentally touching electrical contacts with metal jewelry can damage equipment. Performing tasks such as welding could also cause a metal piece of jewelry to become superheated and cause a severe burn. A spilled or splashed chemical can get under a ring or watchband and cause burning or irritation to the skin.
While working around live circuitry, it is important to remove all pieces of jewelry.
