Dear Neighbor:
This past Sunday, I joined community leaders and the families of the Twin Parks fire victims at the Islamic Cultural Center of the Bronx. Together, we watched as fifteen coffins were carried into the room and laid on the floor for the world to see.
Among them was a small coffin for two-year-old Ousmane Konteh, a devastating image that will stay with me forever. As a father, I cannot begin to imagine the pain that his family faces now. Nothing can replace a human life, and we must do more to ensure we are safe in our homes.
Countless New Yorkers live in dangerous housing conditions. We deserve to live without the fear of losing our own lives, and the lives of our loved ones in our own homes.
Along with my colleagues in the City Council, we will be taking steps to prevent this from happening again. We will ensure existing laws are enforced, and guarantee tenants are protected from unjust housing conditions that many negligent landlords have allowed.
In light of this, it is crucial to know your rights and take note of some tips to keep you safe.
