October 2019
There's always lots going on at DCDC! Here are the highlights!
Around DCDC
PATHS to Social Emotional Learning

All of DCDC's Preschool Classrooms are now using the PATHS Social Emotional Curriculum with our students. The PATHS curriculum creates an environment that helps preschool children develop better self-control, self-esteem, emotional awareness, basic problem-solving skills, social skills, and friendships.  As part of our philosophy, DCDC strives to meet the needs of the whole child – social, emotional and academic. The PATHS program is the final curriculum piece that allows our preschool teachers more time for teaching and our children more capacity for learning.

At Bloom Rd, Twiggle, the Turtle was teaching our Preschoolers what to do if they are sad or mad about something and that it’s ok to be mad. Twiggle tells them to count to 10 take some deep breaths and also to tell someone using your words how you are feeling.
Fire Trucks Visit Wall Street & Bloom Road

It's Fire Prevention Week and volunteers from East End Fire Company in Mahoning Township stopped by both DCDC locations.

The Firefighters talked to the children about fire safety, what do to in case of a fire and practicing fire drills at home and at school. The students also had the opportunity to explore the fire truck inside and out.
Early Intervention Speaks at Bloomsburg University

DCDC's Early Intervention Coordinator presented at two classes in the Department of Exceptionalities this month. Renea Poust shared information with the students about the Early Intervention system, making a referral, DCDC's program and what home visiting looks like with early intervention services.

One of DCDC's Speech Therapists, Angela Lannan joined Renea for one of the presentations. Students were able to ask her questions specific to her role as a Therapist.

If you know of any group or organization that would like to learn more about Early Intervention or DCDC's services, contact Renea Poust, EI Coordinator

Family Fun Night

It was another fun Family Fun Night at Wall Street! Nearly 30 families attended and had a great time exploring the classrooms.
Children and families also got to participate in hands on activities including making their own trail mix, playing in sensory bins, climbing through "spider webs" and making memories with a prop box,

We also had organizations sharing information with families. DCDC's early intervention program, the Early Learning Resource Center and Columbia Montour United Way were all part of the evening.

The Future of Education Depends on Social Emotional Learning: Here’s Why

Social and emotional abilities are said to be indicators of how well a person adjusts to his or her environment, adapts to change and, ultimately, how successful she or he will be in life. In fact, core development abilities such as conscientiousness, emotional stability, openness and agreeableness can be as or even more important than cognitive intelligence in determining future employment. Despite these competencies being related to consequential life outcomes, it can be challenging for educators to find effective ways to prioritize, teach and assess social and emotional skills.

Developing these core life abilities through social and emotional learning (SEL) is critical to a child’s development, as it directly correlates to success and happiness as an adult. For many children, school is the only place where any deficiencies in these abilities can be addressed before they become active members of society.
Why Quality Early Learning Matters
Twiggle, the Turtle, talks with one of our Yogi Bear children about feelings and friendships, laying the foundation for social emotional learning.
