There have been theories around the gifts in "The Twelve Days of Christmas." One of them being because half of the gifts described are birds, (and some historians believe the "five golden rings" reference golden rings around a pheasant's neck). All these birds would be involved in the making of Tudor Christmas Pie, a delicacy normally enjoyed by the wealthy. The "pie" was a turkey, stuffed with a goose, stuffed with a chicken (a French hen?), stuffed with a partridge, stuffed with a pigeon (a turtle dove), all encased in pastry.

In what form does mistletoe grow? Mistletoe is a parasitic plant. It derives nutrients from its host trees by way of specialized roots that penetrate into the tree’s conductive tissue and extract water and nutrients from the host tree. It forms large roundish clusters that resembles bird or squirrel nests. While there are nearly 600 species of mistletoe worldwide, only 15 occur in North America and only one of those is found in Ohio. Its northern limits are on the Ohio side of the Ohio River Valley.
