Robin's Report -
Thank You John Adams!
|
|
In July 1776, John Adams, one of our founding fathers, wrote in a letter to his wife Abigail,
“It (
Independence Day
) ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, (an old form of the word "show") Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and
Illuminations
from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”
DID YOU KNOW that
the tradition of setting off
fireworks on the 4 of July
began in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, during the first organized celebration of Independence Day? Ship’s cannon fired a 13-gun salute in honor of the
13 colonies
. The
Pennsylvania Evening Post
reported: “at night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks (which began and concluded with thirteen rockets) on the Commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated.”
History.com>
Thanks to John Adam’s proclamation, the tradition of fireworks has become the crowning illumination of the Nation’s annual Independence Day Celebrations.

What about our 4
th
of July 2020? With the community held captive by COVID, No Gatherings or Mass Gatherings permitted, and the traditional celebration organized by the
4
th
of July Committee
canceled, the continuity of this cherished tradition was seemingly at risk.
But Wait! Leave it to the
Community with a Big Heart
to find a way to keep this beloved tradition alive, albeit taking a unique approach!
Thanks to the Cities of Grass Valley and Nevada City, the
Parade
will go on! Winding elaborately through Grass Valley and Nevada City neighborhoods, our city leaders are bringing the Parade to you--down your street, past your house, embracing the essence of local.
Thanks to the immense generosity of individuals, organizations, and business leaders, graciously facilitated by the City of Grass Valley, a
Fireworks Spectacular
will grace the skies above the Dorsey Overpass. John Adams would be proud of us- the fireworks show will go on!
In downtown Grass Valley, on the morning of July 4th, the
Grass Valley School Foundation
,
the
Greater Grass Valley Chamber
and the
Nevada County Fairgrounds
volunteers will be poised to place the Stars and Stripes throughout the town. The Military and Veterans organizations will present their Color Guard and assemble their organizations for a mini Patriotic Parade through Grass Valley, beginning at City Hall and ending at the Del Oro Theater.
Our Flag will wave, our Veterans will be honored, and our community will celebrate the most important day in our Nation’s history. COVID may hold us temporarily captive, but it cannot and will not destroy our Hope, Strength, Community Spirit or Celebrated Traditions. We are
In This Together
and we are
#NevadaCountyStrong!
Wishing you all a Happy, Safe 4th of July. Find Event Details Below
