Meet the STEM STARS of the month!

Meet the Interns!

We are excited to feature the 2024 Exelon Foundation STEM Academy interns who are working at The NEED Project this summer to prepare and facilitate the Academies and the new Boys to STEM Academy too. They’ve been working lots of hours to create an amazing Academy experience for the 300 young women and men attending the Academies this summer.

This year we are joined by 3 amazing interns. Rissah Remy a 2020 DC STEM Academy alum, Lauren Rabe a 2022 DC STEM Academy alum, and Melanie Lobos a 2022 Chicago STEM Academy alum who is also one of our 2023 Exelon Foundation STEM Academy Scholarship Recipients

Some excerpts from our interns:

From Lauren: The STEM Academy has been a monumental experience for me, both as a participant and an intern. By working behind the scenes, I'm able to grasp the amount of love and dedication that goes into each and every participant of the STEM Academies. From working on fun presentations to packing each backpack with Academy essentials, I'm able to develop new skills that will be essential for my future endeavors.

From Rissah: Hello, my name is Rissah! I am a rising junior majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Business at the University of Maryland, College Park. My journey with Exelon began as a participant in their 2020 Exelon STEM Academy, and through this academy I came to discover my interest in Computer Science. Through engaging in their year-long events, I had the opportunity to be a part of their student staff team during the 2023 Exelon STEM Academy.

Now I have the great privilege of returning as an intern this summer with The NEED Project. Since I have begun my internship, the skills that have helped me during this time are being an effective communicator, writer, and listener. The ability to communicate with your colleagues is very important, especially when tasked with assignments that have hard-hitting deadlines, and involve money. I'm confident that the abilities I've gained from this experience will help me succeed in life.

From Melanie: The STEM Academy inspired me to pursue Engineering and become a STEM advocate. I participated in the STEM Ambassador Program, the STEM Mentorship Program, and served on the STEM Academy Youth staff in 2023. Currently, I am an Academy Intern contributing to the STEM Academies 2024.

During my time at the Internship, I have learned so many things in logistics and preparing for the Academies. I'm excited to attend the Chicago and the DC Academy this year. My favorite part of the internship has been building relationships with everyone in the office and fostering the advocacy of more diversity and inclusion in STEM.
