Maya,
It's time for barbecue, cold beverages and fireworks. But what do we do when some of our family members are terrified of fireworks?
For many dogs and cats, the loud noises and bright lights can cause anxiety, and even panic. Common reactions include trembling or shaking, hiding or seeking shelter, excessive barking or meowing, pacing or restlessness, loss of appetite, destructive behavior, and attempts to escape or run away.
Here are some tips to help keep your four legged family members safe and calm this holiday weekend:
-
Make sure your pet's microchip is up to date. Many pets find their way to WCHS when they run away or get lost, and microchips help us quickly reunite pets with their owners.
-
Create a safe and comfortable den for them to retreat to, ideally with no windows. Add their bed, toys, and some water.
-
Provide distractions like a new toy.
-
Use white noise or music to block out some of the fireworks explosion noises.
-
Consider an anxiety wrap or vest for particularly anxious pets.
-
If possible stay home with them to make them feel more comfortable.
-
Avoid leaving pets outside, even if they are usually comfortable with loud noises.
