The pedestrian overpass bridge on 1st Avenue East at 27th Street was damaged during the derecho, and will be permanently removed on March 31, 2021.
1st Avenue East Temporary Full Closure
1st Avenue East will be closed to all traffic at 27th Street between 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31 until 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 1 to allow crews to remove the structure.
The bridge, which is not ADA-compliant, was built in 1981. A new pedestrian underpass is scheduled for completion this year on 1st Avenue between 29th Street and 32nd Street, which will have continuous LED lighting and will serve as a safe and ADA-accessible route across 1st Avenue.
The removal is being completed as part of the 1st Avenue East project already scheduled at the 27th Street intersection this year, which includes new traffic signals and intersection realignment.
