Lots of activity on 1st Avenue right now as crews move forward on this joint road/trail project.

Crews are currently working on the pedestrian underpass that will run underneath 1st Avenue between 30th Street Drive and 31st Street NE (across from Raining Rose), and will follow an old railroad line.

The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad line (more commonly known as the “Milwaukee Road”) was abandoned in the 1980’s and the City buried the bridge and paved over it. Fast forward to today and crews are now removing the old bridge to make way for the CeMar trail extension and pedestrian underpass. Trail extension this year will stretch from B Avenue at 29th Street NE, to the Cedar Rapids/Marion City Limits (near the Mount Calvary Cemetery). The CeMar trail will eventually extend to HWY 100 and complete the connection between Marion and Cedar Rapids.
