James 3:1-12
I need to admit, I’ve been in the doghouse before. As cliché as it might seem, coffee, flowers and chocolate do tend to work miracles when you find yourself in this situation. This particular instance, as I was checking out a bouquet of flowers, the cashier looked at me and she asked, “Are these for brownie points or are you in trouble?” I honestly didn’t know what to say in response to her, which must have answered the question. If only I had that same issue the night before; speaking too soon is exactly what had gotten me in trouble in the first place.
James knew all too well the power of the tongue. One of the smallest parts of our bodies can set the whole world on fire! The things we say with our tongue can start wars, create peace, destroy confidence, or instill joy and enthusiasm. It’s so small, but it’s also incredibly difficult to control! Have you ever said something and immediately regretted it? Our conversations fall apart when we follow a “Ready, Shoot, Aim” approach in our speech. But it happens so easily. Blessing and cursing come out of the same mouth. We bless our Father and curse the people made in His same image. James exhorts us: “Brothers and sisters, it should not be this way.”
Questions for Reflection
1. When did you last put your foot in your mouth?
2. How can you use your words to glorify God and edify others today?
Prayer for today
Lord and Master, let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing in your sight. Out of the heart, the mouth speaks. Renew my mind so my words will bring you praise.
