Program Updates & Reminders
First Breath Spotlight: First Breath Program Graduate

"I started smoking at 18 years old when my ex-boyfriend and friends were smoking, so I thought it was cool then ended up getting addicted by age 20. I got pregnant with my first son in 2015. He is now 8. I smoked cigarettes with him until I was 3 months. Then, as soon as I got out of the hospital, of course, I went right back to the bad habit of smoking and drinking because my close cousin had passed away.

Then I ended up pregnant in 2022 with my son. That was the start for me of quitting cigarettes and alcohol. I started this program [First Breath] and my Health Educator gave me so many resources and other options to do and think about when I wanted to smoke. I ended up quitting smoking at 4 months pregnant and haven't touched one since.

When I first found out my benefits are that I'm more energetic and sleep better, it was worth it. I'm so excited for my new journey without smoking. I feel much better with my self - confidence. I love it.

I now focus on my new chapter in life, a new baby, a new wife with two kids. It is so hard sometimes, but then I think back to all the wonderful things I learned in the program, and I always turn to something else like walking listening to music. Also learning to talk to someone I always hold everything in. I feel more energetic, more active, and save a lot of money. And yes, I have a hard time, but I have been clean almost a year. I'm a proud mother of two."

News & Resources
CDC report: in 2021, 1 in 20 women reported smoking during pregnancy, and more than half quit during pregnancy. One in 13 women reported smoking after delivery. Almost all were asked about smoking at prenatal visits, however, only 3 in 5 were asked at their postpartum checkup. Clinicians are encouraged to routinely discuss smoking with pregnant and postpartum patients and counsel them about resources to help them quit.
