Pre-Session Description
"An Apology to our African American Sisters
and Brothers for the Sin of Slavery and its Legacy"

In October 2019, the Dismantling Racism and Privilege team (DRAP) of the Presbytery of Giddings Lovejoy organized a Journey of Reconciliation to Montgomery, Alabama. The objective of the trip was to provide the participants with an opportunity to share the experience of the Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice founded by Bryan Stevenson and the Equal Justice Initiative. There were 38 participants from 12 congregations on this trip.
The participants made a commitment to allow future goals and actions for dismantling racism to grow organically from the group. After three emotional days of discussion, silence, and praying together, several issues were identified, and three initiatives were agreed upon. One of the three initiatives is entitled: AN APOLOGY TO OUR AFRICAN AMERICAN SISTERS AND BROTHERS FOR THE SIN OF SLAVERY AND ITS LEGACY.
Join the DRAP team as they discuss the apology which will be provided January 31 in the presbytery gathering binder on the Presbytery Gathering webpage:  https://www.glpby.org/presbytery-gathering/
Once available, please download the document and join our discussion group at 10:30 a.m. on February 6.
