Trunk or Treat/Fall Festival is this Sunday!
First Church News & Updates - October 26, 2018
First Church will be a busy place this Sunday. In addition to the usual three worship services, the United Methodist Men will be selling their delicious smoked briskets between services. Then later, it is all about Fall Festival/Trunk or Treat. It will be a lot of fun for kids and families. Will the Great Pumpkin make an appearance? Who knows...but there will lots of food, fun activities and treats!

From the great philosopher, Linus: "There are three things I've learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics, and the Great Pumpkin."

Enjoy this First Church E-News.

Words from Will...Members or Partners?
Our theme for our 2018 Stewardship Emphasis is “I Promise – Embracing What Really Matters!” Many United Methodist churches are discarding the term members , because it seems to be a contract that allows us certain privileges that non-members don’t get. It’s the language of a social club more than a family of faith, whereas partnership is about participation in a shared venture. It is being in a Christ-centered community and reaching the world with God’s life-changing, world-changing love. Members, in modern language, seemed to ask “What am I getting?” (fees for services rendered) while partners ask, “What am I offering?” (a way to be part of something far greater than ourselves).

There are five dimensions to our partnership as a United Methodist congregation: prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness. On each of the next five Sundays, we will be talk about one of these dimensions. Properly prayer will be first, for in truth it is foundational for all the rest. It is also the dimension most underutilized and underrated. How are you and I partners in prayer for our church? We live in a day when many Christians are joining the rest of society and doing a lot more preying than praying .

I have a hunch that there is more to these five dimensions than we realize. I look forward to considering them more deeply with you. In the meantime, partner with me in prayer for Sunday.

See you then.

Sincerely in Christ,
Will Cotton Signature
