October 7 is World Communion Sunday
First Church News & Updates - October 5, 2018
World Communion Sunday
This Sunday is World Communion Sunday which we celebrate in tandem with churches all over the world. Together, in communion and offering, through different traditions and customs, we remember the Lord’s Supper. It is a celebration of what Jesus has done, and continues to do, for each one of us.

On Monday, October 8, we observe Columbus Day. The church office will be closed.

Vision 2025: Facilities, Staffing and Resources
So far, you have seen the three major ministry arenas contained in Vision 2025 (intentional community, spiritual formation, and reaching the next generation) and the key initiatives in each arena. Two arenas remain that provide the resourcing for our Vision (operational awesomeness and financial freedom). You should now be able to picture the resources in facilities, staffing and funding feeding up to the three ministry arenas that ultimately feed up to people “experiencing love and spreading hope” in Jesus Christ. How exciting it has been to hear and read from many of you some of the ways you would like to be used of God to serve in 2025!

Remember that this season of Vision 2025 is when we are getting as many people as possible in the know about the scope and direction of where we are headed. It is also the time when we are seeing what is catching fire with people and who will emerge to help lead us toward bringing the Vision to reality. Some will be implemented in 2019-2020, while others will take a little longer to develop. For instance, two initiatives have quickly lit up. The first is the development of LifeGroups in homes throughout the areas where First Church families live (Building Intentional Community arena). Leaders, hosts and training for those hosts will be needed. Growing churches in this generation have these kinds of small groups in which people learn to grow in faith, hope and love together. Remember that the goal is 250 LifeGroups that will touch more than 2,000 lives. The early part of this initiative is about developing the first 50-75 groups, which will touch the first 500+ people. Rev. David Johnson is in consultation with churches who do this ministry particularly well. Please let him know if you would like to host or be trained for leadership. A Steering Team is being formed for this effort.

The second one that has emerged is revamping our communications infrastructure (Operational Awesomeness Arena): increasing our bandwidth for virtual communication, internet and 21st century Christian education resourcing, and development of live streaming for worship and special events. Most people find out about what a church offers in ministry online long before they visit. We are not equipped to show people the way they can experience love and spread hope here. Evangelism, training for mission, children’s ministry, youth ministry, music ministry, community outreach and training of leaders both near and far are completely dependent on this communications upgrade. Chris Burton and Betty Robertson are staff persons you can talk to about getting involved. If you are gifted or trained in the engineering, setup or development of this communications infrastructure, be listening for God’s stirring of your heart.

Other initiatives are stirring as well. Keep listening and in partnership with our Church Council, we will be stepping forward toward becoming who God is calling us to be.

Sincerely in Christ,
Will Cotton Signature

Don't miss this beautiful concert in our Sanctuary on October 7
This Sunday, October 7, at 6 pm in the Sanctuary, we are hosting the Kiev Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. This amazing group of musicians will not only share their passion for music, but also share their witness as part of Music Mission Kiev, an organization that shares the love of Christ with their community.

Former First Church Round Rock members, Roger and Judy Harmon, were able to attend a concert with this group in Hays, Kansas. This is what they had to say,  "Earlier this week I found the reference to the upcoming concert on the evening of October 7th of the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra and Chorus at First Church Round Rock. As a result I discovered this group was presenting at First United Methodist Church, in Hays, Kansas last evening. Judy and I attended and were stunned by the talent and witness of this group. They are a wonderful witness to our faith in Christ and the continuing work of the church in struggling areas in the Ukraine. We hope you will not only attend this concert but invite your friends. You will be touched in so many ways. In fact, were it not that I am attending my 60th anniversary of my graduation in 1958 on the evening of October 6th, we would drive to Round Rock and hear them again. If we can work out a way to attend we still may do so. They are fantastic."

We hope that you will come to this free concert. There will be a love offering which will go towards their tour and Music Mission Kiev.

Thanks, Cindy Thompson!
For the last two and a half years, we have been ably coordinated and resourced by our Operations Manger, Cindy Thompson. Now, she wants to spend more time with her grandchildren, do some traveling and take time to develop other dimensions of her life. Cindy has advanced our ministry in so many ways: improving our facilities and grounds, maintaining our facilities and helping us with preventative maintenance, strengthening our human resources and offering support and guidance for office and maintenance staff. She has added the word opportunities to our staff and congregation’s vocabulary (translated unwelcome and annoying challenges), and has modeled servant leadership among us.
Cindy Thompson and staff
Thursday, our staff hosted and toasted Cindy at a lunch in our Community Room.

Cindy, thanks so much! You have blessed us beyond the words we can express!

We also give thanks to her husband, Doug, for his outstanding support, especially in the area of IT and many other areas.

Tara Harrelson
Please join the First Church Staff in welcoming Tara Harrelson as the new Preschool Programming and Childcare Coordinator. You may recognize Tara as she has been on our childcare staff for over a year already, but she moved into her new role last Sunday. She is the mother of four boys and brings many gifts, along with many experiences to our Children's Ministry Team. If you need to contact Tara regarding preschool or childcare issues, her email is [email protected].

We wish Rhanda Schrank the best of luck in her new role as a school psychologist at Meridel Residential Treatment Center. Rhanda remains a faithful church member, and active volunteer, so you are sure to see her around our campus.
