Vision 2025 - Experience Love. Spread Hope.
What a Great Vision 2025 Launch!
More than 150 attended the Vision 2025 Launch Lunch last Sunday to become better informed about Vision 2025 and the key initiatives that we will be launching over the next seven years. After a preliminary presentation by Rob Putney and Will Cotton, people broke up into five groups to share ideas and ask questions. From those discussions, the Vision Core Team and Church Council are already beginning to see some of the hot spots where people want to be involved. For instance, we know that creating home-based LifeGroups will be one of the early developments as well as enhancing our Communications infrastructure and methods.

There are also leaders stepping forward who want to be part of advancing both program and facilities for Children’s and Youth Ministries, as well as our Leadership Development program. People are talking about new ways of budgeting and stewardship, so that facilities are well-maintained and innovative ministries are underwritten. In Mission and Outreach, the clear developing passion is to become a stronger force for local mission, as a congregation and in partnership with other churches and groups. In other words, things are starting to spiritually pop (picture the first sounds of popcorn).

Special thanks to LEADFirst for hosting this great event and for the Vision Core Team for their guidance of the whole Vision 2025 effort. This is the socialization stage of Vision 2025, where everyone is getting informed and getting on board.

Where is God stirring your mind and heart?

Words from Will...
Dr. Will Cotton
“The Proof Is In the …”
When I was growing up, I would hear the phrase, “The proof is in the puddin’.” I’m not sure I knew what they meant when they said it, but I sure did like “puddin” (vanilla, chocolate, tapioca, butterscotch, and best of all, banana). As for Vision 2025, the proof is in the people that are reached with the good news of God’s love in Jesus Christ and the transformative difference our congregation’s ministry makes beyond our walls. It’s about changed lives and making God’s kingdom present in our hurting and fractured world.

Through intentionally developed community we invite people to discover their sense of place...that they belong. If we do that right, as we intentionally do that for guests and new folks in our church, we will also be better at community for those of us who have been here for a long time. Through superb spiritual formation people are trained in the scriptures for a strong faith and developed as leaders for service in the world. If we do that right, we become a continuous growing movement that is ready at God’s command to meet the world at its greatest need. We belong and we train for a purpose, to be God’s force of saving and transformative love. In the end, it’s not about us, it’s about God and the world God so loves (John 3:16).

This Sunday, we set our sights on what God is calling us to become beyond our walls. Just as we found on the previous two Sundays, this is the next chapter that springs from our congregation’s great missional heart. At First Church, we do a lot! How can we focus what we do so that our missionary work (locally, regionally and internationally) has its greatest impact? How does our work lead people to a life-changing faith in Jesus Christ? Every generation must ask that question anew. This will be an exciting Sunday as Jodi Marfell, Cheryl Glasgow and Pat McCain stir our hearts and minds in this arena – as well as hear and see the report of Mission Panama!

Sincerely in Christ,
Will Cotton Signature

The concert is free and there will be a free-will offering. All proceeds will help fund their tour and Music Mission Kiev.

Boy Scout Troop 157
First Church charters Boy Scouts of America Troop 157, made up of boys ages 11-17. They meet each Monday at 7 pm in the Family Life Center and go on camp outs one weekend every month. This summer the Scouts traveled to Kia Kima Scout Reservation in northern Arkansas for a week and some older Scouts spent a week at The Summit High Adventure Base in West Virginia.

The Troop has 91 active Scouts. They recently held a Court of Honor and awarded 354 Merit Badges to 67 Boys Scouts which were earned just in the past 7 months. There were 84 different types of Merit Badges presented, which shows that there are many opportunities for the Scouts to learn valuable life skills. Some of those Merit Badges included: Welding, Soil and Water Conservation, Robotics, Programming, Environmental Science, Emergency Preparedness, Family Life, Personal Fitness, and Small Boat Sailing, just to mention a few.

There were 41 rank advancements earned and 34 special awards presented to the boys. Troop 157 also participated in several Eagle Scout projects and countless service projects at First Church, the Texas Baptist Children's Home, Round Rock Parks Department, as well as others out of state. Our Troop is producing the leaders of tomorrow by living the Scout Oath "On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country...."  Congratulations Scouts.
