Ushers needed at First Church for Sunday Worship.

The ushering action team is looking for members of our church to help out with ushering responsibilities during Worship on Sundays, and special occasions. Ushers hand out bulletins, assist people with finding a seat, collect individual offerings and at the end of the worship service, return Bibles and Hymnals to their places in the pews. This is a great volunteer opportunity for those who wish to serve our church but who may not have the time for evening meetings or have family obligations. Come join this important action team that helps our worship service to be a welcoming experience for all. Contact Nancy Stover with questions or to join our team!  Please look for the signup at the Welcome Sunday picnic!

October 5 at 7 PM What Can I Recycle? Presentation on

When you recycle, should you leave the lid on a bottle or jar? If a spray bottle has a metal spring, can it be recycled? What if you can’t read the small number inside the tiny “recycle” symbol?  Can pill bottles be recycled? If there’s just a small grease spot on a pizza box, can it be recycled?

If questions like this have you stumped, find the answers at a talk on Wednesday, October 5 at the church. “Is This Recyclable?” will be explained by church member Sunshine Fiore, a packaging engineer with more than 20 years of experience in the consumer production industry. “Just toss it in the recycling bin” no longer applies these days, and Sunshine will explain the do’s and don’ts of being a responsible recycler in 2022. The talk, open to the public, will be at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall.

Sunshine earned her BS in Packaging Engineering from Rutgers University and is currently a manager at Unilever, the global consumer products maker of well-known brands such as Dove, Vaseline, Suave, Hellmann's, Breyers and Good Humor, at their R&D Technical Center in Trumbull. The event is sponsored by our church’s Environmental Justice Team and the interfaith group Cheshire Creation Care.

October 8: Sustainability Fair

October 15, 10 AM-12 PM: Toys ‘n Trimming Free Give and Take Event

As a way to keep unused items out of the trash stream and our closets we ask people to meet on the Green with their used but still serviceable toys, sports equipment, and holiday decorations for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hannukah, and Christmas that they wish to give to someone who can use them. You may bring a blanket or card table to display your items. There is no need to offer something in order to receive something. Rules are: no exchange of money is permitted and you must remove all unclaimed items that you brought. The church dumpster will not be available for discards. Come if you want to give, take, or both!

Chancel Choir

If you sing, or think you would enjoy learning to, then please come and try out our chancel choir! We have 24 dedicated church members who join in song throughout the program year to “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord.” Rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 7:00 - 9:00 PM, and on Sundays from 9:00 - 9:45 AM before singing for 10:00 Worship. Practices have begun!

Music with Friends

Our new group, “Music with friends,” involves individuals, students, children, families, and some choir members. We sing on select Sundays throughout the program year. Our first time together will occur on Sunday, September 25 at 10:00 Worship. We will practice a simple song at 9:15 just prior to the service. All you have to do is show up and sing!  To learn more about Chancel Choir and participating in Music with Friends, please contact Music Director, Joe D’Eugenio.

Caring Ministry and Parish Care are once again able to deliver alter flowers to members unable to attend services. If you would like to participate in this uplifting program and help brighten someone’s day, please email Jane Brown or call (203) 535-9193.

Coffee hour is a great way to connect, catch up and build our church community. Caring Ministry invites all members of the congregation and their families to join together and host an after service coffee hour in the coming months. Guidelines and assistance will be provided to all hosts. Let’s enjoy reconnecting with our church community. To schedule a coffee hour, please sign up on Board in the parlor or email Jane Brown or by phone at 203-535-9193.

Have a Green Welcome Sunday:  We hope all members and friends of First Congregational Church will join us on the 18th as we celebrate Welcome Sunday. It’s a good time to rededicate ourselves not only to a new year but to the fact that we have been named a Green Church of the United Church of Christ. The Environmental Justice Team’s theme this autumn will be to reduce the amount of trash generated by the church, and that push begins on Sunday. Although bottled water will be available at the after-worship picnic, we urge everyone to bring your own water in a reusable container; it not only takes energy and uses petrochemicals to make plastic bottles, but they must be dealt with after use. Bins for recyclables, food scraps, and other materials will be prominently available, along with guidance on which refuse goes where. There’s going to be lots to celebrate on Sunday, and we hope you will join us in rededicating our church to a new sense of God-inspired environmental responsibility.    To learn more about our church’s Environmental Justice Team, email Anne McNulty or Karen Schnitzer
