Emergency Fund - Start Small, Think Big
Many people wonder how they can build an emergency fund when they’re trying to pay off their debt. It isn't as hard as you might think. The strategy is to start small, change a few habits, and change your mindset.

If you're starting from scratch with your emergency fund, begin by saving one month’s worth of living expenses while paying the minimum on your credit cards. When you have that first month of emergency funds started, turn your focus to your credit card debt and pay more than the monthly minimum. Once the credit card debt is paid off, go back to building your emergency fund.

If your credit card debt is very high and can’t be paid in full within a couple of months, then alternate the extra payment every other month: The first month, add to your emergency fund and pay the minimum on your credit cards. The next month, pay more on your credit cards and skip the deposit to your emergency fund, etc.

Here are five ways to boost your emergency fund and change savings habits for life:

  1. Treat savings as a bill. Figure out what you can afford to save each month and stash away $75, $50, $25, or even $10 a month. No matter the amount, it adds up and can become habit-forming. As your financial situation improves, increase the amount.
  2. Live one raise behind. When you get a raise, don’t begin spending more. Instead, apply the extra amount to your emergency fund.
  3. Automate it. Set up an automatic transfer to your emergency funds account. When the credit union receives your direct-deposited pay check, you can have a portion of it put directly into your savings or emergency account. Out of sight, out of mind, but you know it's there if you really need it.
  4. Give savings a garage-sale boost. Go from room to room in your home and purge stuff you no longer want or need. Then schedule a garage sale. Both your house and your savings will look better.
  5. Think of it as a life jacket. If you can't find that initial spark to get started, ask yourself how you'd pay your bills if you lost your job tomorrow. Having an emergency fund will help you keep “your head above water.”

Summer Travel & Your Debit Card
All debit card processors use sophisticated systems to try and prevent fraudulent transactions. Unfortunately, this can sometimes prevent legitimate transactions from being processed. The best way to minimize the chance of this happening is to notify us before you travel. A simple call to the credit union to give us your travel dates and location(s) in the U.S. improve the chances of these transactions clearing normally. If you are traveling internationally, FirstCCU supports limited Debit card use so you need to contact us before you leave to unblock your Debit card.

Meet Our Staff
We are pleased to announce and welcome two new additions to our mortgage team. Leslie Hass, Vice President of Mortgages and Patricia Knoble, Assistant Vice President of Origination joined the credit union the beginning of June. Leslie and Patricia bring over 70 years of combined experience in both the finance and mortgage industries to FirstCCU and our members.

As a native of Rock County, Leslie Hass grew up in Beloit, Wisconsin and for the past 26 years has resided in rural Beloit with her husband Leon of 44 years. They have three grown children, five grandchildren, two dogs, one cat, a mule, and a pony named Dolly. In her recent past role as Vice President of Lending at Parker Community Credit Union, Leslie led her team with a sales culture that ensured outstanding service to credit union members. She has also volunteered her time with CASA and supports the United Way and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. In her time away from the office, Leslie enjoys gardening and loves spending time with her family and friends.

"I'm excited to join the FirstCCU family," said Mrs. Hass. "I love working with people and look forward to sharing my experience with our employees and I want our members to feel good about their experience with us. Caring is what we're all about."

Patricia Knoble was born in Beloit and has lived in many communities within Rock County. She now resides in Janesville with her husband Thomas, who also worked in the mortgage industry before retiring 5 years ago. They have seven grandchildren with one more on the way in October. Patricia has also been involved in the community with multiple organizations. She is a former Board Member of Habitat for Humanity, a prior Forward Janesville Ambassador, and supporter of CASA. Traveling is one of Pat's favorite things to do with her husband; from Mexico to Ireland they have been many places together with a full bucket list still to experience.

"Helping people with the best choice possible with their mortgage loan has been and will continue to be one of my greatest passions," said Mrs. Knoble. "I am excited to have that personal contact with our members and help them achieve the American Dream of owning a home."
