A Hopeful Message from Mother Nature:
The earth’s largest living organisms are groves of aspen trees. Aspen roots are shallow and horizontal, creating a single root system which can support thousands of individual trees in a single living unit.
In the summer of 2002, countless aspens were destroyed in the Hayman forest fire, the largest in Colorado’s recorded history. In some areas the fire left charred tree skeletons, in other areas the trees as well as their roots were totally burned away. This photograph (above left) was taken a few months after the fire, during which there had been virtually no precipitation.
