2021 January  FDKM Newsletter

Let's hope 2021 isn't a repeat of 2020!

Hello FDKM'ers

Happy New Year!  We made it! We survived the crazy historic year of 2020!  Although, 2021 has already kicked off with it's own history making events......
But aside from the chaos that's going on in the world, here at FDKM we're going to be optimistic about our 2021 outlook.  We hope to spark everyone's (and our own) fighting spirit this year.  We almost got knocked out, but we're going to get back up and keep on doing what we do best -teaching and training.
We've already kicked off the year with our January Introduction to Krav Maga Course with some great and enthusiastic participants.  As with most years in the past we run this course back to back at the start of the year. So if you've been curious about training/starting Krav Maga, here's your chance. Our next course starts on February 1st! Space is limited, so don't wait too long to register.
In the next few months we'll begin to implement some changes we've had in the works for awhile. Some changes are subtle and others will take some getting use too.  We'll try our best to roll out some of these changes as smoothly as possible, but it's inevitable that there will be some hiccups.... Like the recent, barrage of emails that some of you might have received....oopsssieee.....sorry about that.
We are also hoping to restart some of our special workshops and seminars again in the near future.  It's all dependent on how the pandemic pans out and if we are able to hold these events.  Speaking of Covid-19..... We will continue to require masks, temperature checks, and best practices to keep everyone safe.
Well read on! We hope to see you guys online or in-person!

- Nick, Ann, and the First Defense Krav Maga Team

Did You Notice the New Schedule?

We've implemented a new schedule for the new year. If you would like to download a pdf copy of our new schedule you can do it below:

Beginning in January the following schedule changes will be made:

  • Saturday's will no longer have a 15 minute break between classes
  • Saturday class times have changed (due to the removal of the 15 minutes between classes. . . )
  • Class levels for adults have changed
  • Saturday classes will continue to stream live but will not be recorded
  • Additional in-person classes have been added for Mondays & Thursdays

What Level Classes am I Now?

With some of our instructors returning for in person instruction, we've been able to return to splitting classes a little more according to levels.  Although many of you enjoyed having "All levels" classes, it reduced the amount of material we are able to teach each week.   In the upcoming months we'll be rolling out how progression through the curriculum will look and change.  But for the time being, those who currently hold the following ranks are eligible for the following classes:

Fundamentals- For beginners who have not tested for a rank yet

Level One classes- For students who currently hold a rank of P1-P2. The material in class will cover P1-P3.

Level Two classes- For students who currently hold a rank of P3-P5. The material covered in class will be through G1.

Level Three classes- For students who hold a Graduate rank and above. The material covered in class will be Graduate Level and above.

All Levels classes- Are open to all. Material taught will be dependent on the makeup of the class and instructors discretion.

Strike Classes- Are open to everyone who is Level One and above, and to our Jr/Teen participants.  Equipment is required to participate in this class

Kids & Youth-  We will continue to combine these two age divisions.  Kids (ages 5-7) & Youth (ages 7-10). However, we are not currently accepting new enrollments for the Kid's division.

Junior & Teen- We will continue to combine these two age divisions.

Shuaijiao Shoutouts!
 2021 training

Shuai-chiao

Just a quick reminder that our Saturday Shauijiao Class time has changed to 12:30pm-1:15pm.

We're looking forward to getting the gang back together again in 2021 for some more Shauijaio!  If you have questions about Shauijaio training here at First Defense please feel free to contact coach Nick.

As for the the 2021 competition schedule, here is a quick announcement from the US Shuaijiao Association about the upcoming year:

Happy New Year!
We are all eager to move on from 2020 and continue to progress the momentum of shuaijiao in the United States and around the world. As promised, we want to give everyone our view of 2021 and current plans. Few key points and please stay tuned as the whole Covid-19 situation is a fluid situation.

1) April 2021 Nationals (in Cleveland) is postponed. We will evaluate a possible national in the fall and will announce that in the summertime based off the pandemic situation.

2) Our summer tournament in the San Francisco bay area is undecided as we wait for our sponsor's decisions on their larger athletic event in the Bay Area. We will announce the status of this late spring or when we hear from the sponsors.

3) We will offer some virtual seminars to provide access to our coaches and renowned black belt masters. We are currently putting together the curriculum and scheduling that would be appropriate for a virtual teaching environment. Feel free to send us messages on ideas for this.

Although 2020 was relatively a non-eventful year for shuaijiao, one year is only a blip in a 4000+ years old martial art. We look forward to 2021 and future years.

Reminders

If you have had an address change or need to update your credit card please remember to update it on MindBody or talk to Ann at the front desk.

Only shoes that have never been worn outside are allowed on the mats for class. If you don't have indoor-only shoes, bare feet or socked feet are fine, but we highly recommend getting some shoes for class. This will help keep our mats clean free of dirt, grime, and germs from the outside.

It is First Defense's policy that all men wear groin protection when they attend class. This is for your own safety. We do not want anyone to take a groin strike unprotected. We also want to remind all members that you should be wearing First Defense t-shirts and pants or shorts (w/ appropriate rank patch) when you're taking Krav Maga classes.

You should also be wearing your hand wraps during class, especially the striking class. Not only do they provide protection to hands and wrists, they also soak up a lot of the sweat that will otherwise end up in the mitts and gloves.

Thank you for taking the time to review our News & Updates. We look forward to seeing you in class soon.

Sincerely,

Nick & The First Defense Krav Maga Team
