BUILDING COMMUNITY. TRANSFORMING LIVES. ENGAGING THE WORLD.

JANUARY 2026 - HAPPY NEW YEAR!

"Everybody can be great because anybody can serve." Martin Luther King, Jr.

Monday, January 19 is the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, and the Outreach Commission is inviting all of First Presbyterian Church to make it a day on instead of a day off, by showing up to help CCDRA, The Coastal Carolina Disaster Resiliency Agency (read about them here: https://ccdranc.org/ ). CCDRA does so much good in our community and on January 19 they could use our help making sure they are able to keep doing what they are called to do.

We'll be helping at their main headquarters and at the New Hope Volunteer Village (Neuse Forest Presbyterian Church) with a variety of tasks. Work begins at 9:00 am with an orientation and safety briefing. You can stay for part of the day or the full day (we'll finish by 4:00 pm). Full day volunteers are invited to bring a bag lunch. All ages. All skill levels. All are welcome!

What will we be doing?

  • Deep cleaning NHVV guest quarters and laundry room
  • Window washing
  • Scraping and painting office building windows
  • Power washing outdoor walkways and outdoor furniture
  • Assembling hurricane preparedness packets
  • Installing security cameras and solar panels at office building and warehouse
  • Organizing supply shelves and storage room in NHVV
  • Deep cleaning office building

If you'd like to help, just sign up below and we will send more information as the date gets closer!

New Faith Formation Classes

January 4 begins a new season of adult Faith Formation classes. Classes take place on Sundays from 9:40 - 10:40 am.

Jesus: A Pilgrimage - Wendy Moeller leads the next stage of our exploration of Father James Martin’s Jesus: A Pilgrimage, a rich blend of travelogue, Bible study, and spiritual memoir. Drawing on historical Jesus scholarship, spiritual reflection, and stories from the Holy Land, the class invites participants into the world of Jesus—and no prior attendance is required.

The Present Word - George Evans will lead The Present Word, an in-depth Bible study that explores Scripture’s meaning and relevance through a focused six-year journey. This winter’s quarter centers on core teachings of the Christian faith, including holiness and Scripture, grace and reconciliation, and the life and teaching of the church.

A Gentle Answer - Dick Betts and Lana Brunk will lead book discussion class based on Scott Sauls’ A Gentle Answer, exploring how Christians can respond to a divided and defensive world with Christlike gentleness. Through reflection and discussion, the class invites participants to let go of “us versus them” mentalities and embody a way of living that turns away wrath and witnesses to God’s love.

New Members’ Class - Are you interested in exploring what it would mean to be a part of the First Presbyterian Church, New Bern congregation? If you’d like more information, want to sign up, or are interested in joining before then, please reach out to Anna Pinckney Straight. This class meets on January 11, 18, and 25 during the Faith Formation hour in the conference room on the 1st floor of the Ministry Center.

2025-2026 Stewardship Update

I am grateful to share that, as of December 30, we have received 213 pledges toward the 2026 General Fund - 18 more than this time last year. Included in those are many increased pledges and 32 new pledges, which is truly encouraging news and a meaningful sign of faith and commitment from our church family.

At this point, the total pledged is approximately $50,000 below last year’s total. We are prayerfully and confidently hopeful that in the weeks ahead this gap will be closed and we will surpass last year's total, allowing us to set the 2026 budget at the February meeting of Session. Traditionally, the approved budget will be shared with the congregation at a congregational meeting later in February or March.

If you have not yet had the opportunity to make a pledge, we invite you to do so - both as an act of spiritual stewardship and as a gift that supports the planning and ministry of First Presbyterian Church. Pledge information is available at www.firstpresnb.org/give, or you may contact the church office for assistance.

WENDY MOELLER

William Lee Hawkins Library

As the arrival of January and New Years each year is typically understood as an opportunity to reflect on the year past, may I share with you two unfortunate circumstances which have impacted me in the last few weeks? Twice this fall I discovered, several weeks after the events, that someone I hold dear had recently lost someone they held dear and I had no knowledge of that loss. My heart ached both for their loss and also for the fact that I had not reached out to them in the tender first moments of grief. This is one of the hazards of not being on Facebook, which has apparently assumed a role in our society akin to that of the old town crier, a place where all the important news gets disseminated. Please, keep me informed, folks!!

And now it has happened again! I just discovered last week that one of my favorite authors had died in the fall of 2022, only now realizing he is no longer with us. Thomas Cahill was a devout Catholic who actually studied for the priesthood, but who eventually found his calling in being a Classics scholar and university professor. He was also an enthusiastic historian who began writing popular history for non-historians utilizing his Hinges of History series which “retells the story of Western civilization through ‘great gift-givers’ — key moments, individuals, and ideas that have fundamentally shaped the West." Between 1995 and 2010 Cahill wrote six volumes of his intended seven volume series, and I voraciously read each as they came out. Ever since 2010 I had been searching on line for the final volume which he once told me (when I spent an afternoon with him sitting in a fireplace warmed library in Fearrington Village) was to cover the period from the Enlightenment to our modern world. Alas, it never arrived and recently I found out that was due to cancer and to his death in 2022.

Let me highly recommend for you, of those six, the five volumes which we have in our library, listed in their historical order, which is, parenthetically, not the order in which they were written:

  • The Gifts of the Jews - How a Tribe of Desert Nomads Changed the Way Everyone Thinks and Feels (232 CAH). This book, possibly my favorite, explores the influence the ancient Jews have had on the entire world, not just those of us who share the Judeo-Christian worldview. Specifically, did you know our conception of time comes straight from them?
  • Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea - Why the Greeks Matter (909.09 CAH) - in which one gains an understanding of the prevalent world view that informed the culture in which Jesus, his disciples and other early followers, including the Apostle Paul, were living and breathing.
  • Desire of the Everlasting Hills - The World Before and After Jesus (232 CAH) in which Cahill nominates Jesus as the most daring and provocative figure in all of history, referencing his roles as “the last prophet”, “the cosmic Christ”, and “the Gentile Messiah”. A couple of those might be up for debate … in my humble opinion! I’ll share with you if you decide to read the book and would care to discuss it.
  • How the Irish Saved Civilization - The Untold Story of Ireland’s Heroic Role from the Fall of Rome to the Rise of Medieval Europe (232 CAH). This one was the biggest surprise to me. Most of the information contained therein, including the story of Saint Patrick, whom Cahill designates “the first missionary”, was totally unknown before I read the volume.
  • …and finally, Heretics and Heroes - How Renaissance Artists and Reformation Priests Created our World (232 CAH), his treatment of plagues, reformers, and history-changing art, newly donated to the library prompting, along with my misadventures described above, the genesis of this month’s article.

Give yourself, on the heels of this season of giving, the gift of several hours of reading about these ‘great gift-givers’ as you ponder also the greatest gift of all! Each book will be on the big table in the middle of the William Lee Hawkins Library on the second floor of the Ministry Center for your perusal and checking out, should you desire, and later on the shelves.

CREATION CARE TEAM

Pumpkin Recycling

Did you know that pumpkins create methane gas when put into a landfill? It's because they don’t get enough oxygen to break down properly.

What to do? Feed them to the pigs!

With pumpkin donations from many First Presbyterian members along with leftover seasonal stock from Pine Cone Home and Garden, that’s just what members of the First Pres Creation Care team did! Beth and Marc Dabagian, Helen Robinson, Garrett Perdue, and John and Mary McCutcheon took three full truckloads to local farmers to provide a special treat for their pigs. Two truckloads went to Shenk Farm in Newport, and another to Bob Campbell at ENC Beef in Askin.

Thanks so much for your support with this initial project! We’ve got a busy 2026 planned, and we welcome the addition of Ann and Craig Thornton to our team!

Remember, reduce, reuse, recycle!  We can take care of God’s creation and keep it a beautiful place for all.

Backpack Blessings

Last month, Backpack Blessings put together boxes of staples plus a holiday meal, for all the families whose kids receive the snack packs. And the families came and received the boxes directly from us...so it was a wonderfully connected way of sharing holiday joy. I always look forward to this, as do many of you!

All of our families received a holiday ham or turkey, 2 large boxes of food staples, a bag of frozen items, a large bag of additional foods, a holiday pie, and a bag of fresh fruit!

As our clients pulled their cars up, we loaded holiday foods into the recipients cars, and exchanged holiday greetings and smiles. As always, our congregation supplied willing hands and hearts for the Backpack Blessing Holiday Meal assembly and distribution. In total, we packed about 550 large boxes of Holiday food for each of our 270 recipient families. Each family received a bountiful supply of food staples and a complete holiday meal for the family.

We unpacked and stocked the food on the tables, assembled the food boxes and bags, then broke down the shipping containers, and built more basic food boxes for the next shift to fill. A couple of photos of the process are shown, along with Jane Dail and Taylor McClellan who helped orchestrate one of the builds.

As always, First Pres. is central to the success of this ministry. The following found the time during this holiday season to lend willing hands to this ministry. A tip of the hat to Karen Reed, Taylor McClellan, Olivia Peterson, Kirsten Sonstegard, MaryLynn Keener, Nancy McAden, Gwen Lessard, Wendy Moeller, Pam Gaskill, Ann Griffin-Hall, Beth Paul, Ann Thornton, Anne Marie Lathan, and Jane Dail.

Thank you, as always, to First Pres. for your continuing support of time, treasure, and talent to this ministry, as well as to Jane Dail who sits on the Board of Backpack Blessings. And a special thanks to our wonderful staff without whom we could never continue to contribute to this ministry in such a meaningful way. And though this particular 'special' food outreach only happens once a year, this was one of MANY Backpack ministry builds First Pres. participated in this year. A total of over 60 First Presbyterian members engaged in at least one of these food/snack pack builds during the course of 2025.

We look forward to continuing our support for this ministry which serves Craven, Jones, and Pamlico County school age kids and their families as we move into 2026 and beyond.

Upcoming Build - January 5 & 6, Garber Methodist Church
