I've had the pleasure of knowing and working with this First Gen success for more than ten years. I saw him in action in Beijing and followed his leadership in numerous African countries. We are proud he is a pillar of the GlobalMindED International Advisory Council as Chair.

Torian Richardson's reason for being is to inspire the genius in people to live valiantly so that potential is turned into impact. He does so as a Culture Scientist, Investor, and Global Executive Coach helping people prosper and organizations optimize during times of complexity.
Torian earned a Bachelor's of Business Administration in Finance from Benedictine University, a Masters of Public Administration in International Development from Tsinghua University in Beijing,
where he learned Mandarin, and graduated from Harvard Business School's General Management Program.
What is your personal story?
In short, I was born at South Chicago Hospital of a family rooted in Chicago's Southside, my parents were dedicated working-class people. My father was a bus driver for Chicago Transit Authority and my mother worked nights at the main U.S. Post Office downtown. Like most of our parents they did the best they could with where they were; always trying to set my sister and I up for a better life. Faith, access to a safer environment outside the home and better schools was always their intention. Chicago's Auburn/Gresham, West Englewood, and Roseland neighborhoods as well as Aurora/Naperville and Justice were the areas I grew up in during my formative years. But what really shaped me was not only life in these diverse neighborhoods but growing up in a well-intended yet abusive family during these critical years. I didn't feel safe inside my home. It was the cycle of generational verbal, physical, sexual and emotional abuse that helped frame the world for me. Up until my late 20's that defined me, until I was tired of feeling anger and lack. Never to go back to that state, I decided that I had to be courageously vulnerable enough to make my internal soul greater than any external environment. This was the beginning of my personal expansion journey that has become the root of every aspect of my life.
What allows others to truly be successful in overcoming huge economic challenges?
Mindset. Like most things I had to learn to start with myself first. It's true that I am a NCAA scholarship athlete and a first generation college graduate. It is also true that I failed out of undergrad my first time around. By the second semester of my freshman year I had lost my athletic scholarship and left school with a 1.1 GPA. Knowing that I had not given my all, I attended community college, focused and transferred to Benedictine University with a 3.6 GPA. I selected Benedictine not only because of its personalized education and so that I could play sports but also because I learned about the amount of college debt that many of my peers were graduating with. I didn't want to start out my life trying to dig out of a hole, so I worked and stayed at home during the off season of football to pay for school so that I didn't have to borrow money for my degree in Finance. This mindset helped me to have different options in the future.
These are my top 10 building blocks to
learning
and building
long-term economic viability:
* Writing down your goals and the steps/timeline you believe it will take to reach them.
* Leverage.
* Delayed gratification.
* Resourcefulness - working smarter not harder.
* Mentors - learn from those who are where you are trying to be.
* Supply and Demand.
* Equity and Ownership.
* Compounding Interest.
* Personal and Business Credit.
* Building multiple streams of income - at least three.
Even in the toughest circumstances there is opportunity, overcoming huge economic challenges starts with trying to understand the psychology of economics. The earlier a person starts implementing an investment mindset and doing now what others won't, in the future you will be able to do later what others can't.
Torian has held a variety of corporate leadership roles in the U.S and internationally. The scope of his work has been vast and includes work in the fields of finance, education, and transportation with general management responsibilities of over $80M in P&L leadership. Additionally, Torian has served as a Chairman of the Board for GlobalMindED as well as served as a consultant with Harvard Business School Club of New York for international projects. In Africa, as the Business Solutions Director based out of Lagos, Nigeria, Torian was responsible for successfully building an educational technology and service business throughout the African continent. From Africa, Torian moved to China and became an entrepreneur. There he founded Guanxi Universal, began lecturing at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing and Changchun Finance College as well as developed content on Courageous Vulnerability, Navigating Uncertainty and Belonging.

Your support also helps teachers who can't afford the conference fees, faculty at colleges which are under resourced and students who persist at those universities despite food insecurity and/or housing insecurity.

Entertainment For Change creates original song and dance (#SDGGROOVE) to educate young people on the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Like any meaningful social change, the original song and dance is a collaborative effort between more than 20 singers, dancers, writers and choreographers. Lauded vocalists Natalie Weiss and Antonio Cipriano lend their voices to the powerful lyrics, while each SDG is danced by performers of all calibers.

Join the #NeedHerScience Campaign that is aimed at addressing journal-level gender bias. For decades, studies have demonstrated gender bias in publishing. This may occur at various stages in the process, including at the level of the
journals. The equitable inclusion of women editors at every level is long overdue. Addressing journal gender bias starts at the top.
The goal: To raise awareness about gender bias in publishing and share with stakeholders, including journal editors and owners, the overall number of scientists, healthcare professionals and others who have taken the pledge. The pledge can be taken anonymously. Educators and others are encouraged to take the pledge and share information about this issue with colleagues and trainees.
