The tech industry is dominated by white males, many of whom come from backgrounds of privilege. Lani is a black woman in tech from a loving, but under-resourced family who lost her mom way too young. She is an example of how you can be the first on multiple levels at a company like Microsoft- as a woman, as an African American, and as someone from very modest means who earned it all on her own. Lani and her pathbreaking work within the field of technology is an inspiration not just for young black girls, but for all of us on how to work and lead inclusively. Lani Phillips experienced loss early in her life when her Mother lost her battle to cancer when Lani was only 12 years old. Her Dad assumed full-time responsibility for her and her sister. Her fondest memories of such a dark time are how people spoke about her Mother’s influence in their life. This set the course for Lani’s life because little did she know that it would become her driving motivation for why she wanted to be the difference in the world.
Lani went on to finish college getting her MBA at UT Dallas and has spent 23+ years at one of the biggest companies in tech, Microsoft Corporation. She quickly learned that her passion for technology was fueled by her desire to help companies realize their full potential and helping them solve critical business problems.
She acknowledges as she climbed the corporate ladder, it was not easy because there were many times that she felt invisible. This ignited her commitment to show up differently for others and be an inclusive leader. Where everyone she encountered would always feel seen, valued, and heard. As she continued in leadership, Lani has been very intentional around how she leads her organization around talent management, mentoring, coaching for success and professional development. She compliments this work with writing and speaking out about how to be a more compassionate and inclusive leader. She has been a role model for many women and people of color, leading from her strengths and demonstrating the benefits of this leadership approach.
For those who are just getting started on their journey in college, Lani believes leadership is all about influence. You can start influencing right where you are today. Every day you have a choice to lead by example or follow others. You matter in this world. Stand up and use your voice for good. Lift others up, advocate for those being marginalized or dismissed and always extend a hand to others as you climb. Leaders recognize that people matter. Create space to allow your colleague’s voices to be heard, strategize on problems together and support one another. Remember effective leadership is not about titles at all. It is about how you influence people to bring the best version of themselves forward.
Lani’s vision for the tech industry is that we continue to understand the importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion because of the immense value it brings to any organization as it drives its market share and shareholder value. In the tech industry, we also have a responsibility to build it into our solutions as we become a world that is driven more by Artificial Intelligence. We must root out bias of any kind and represent the diversity of our beautiful world. To do this her call to action is three things: 1) Continue getting proximity to understand the DEI issues that are all around you 2) Be more intentional and impatient around accelerating progress 3) Demonstrate courage to have the difficult conversations and the willingness to confront and drive the necessary change. Remember, proximity breeds empathy and compassion. When we lead from a place of compassion, we can broaden our perspectives and be a more inclusive world.

The U.S. is now the world’s largest producer of crude oil and natural gas, two circumstances that are universally disrupting international geopolitical order. The earth has a finite supply of natural resources and a rapidly growing and over consuming population.
As America positions itself for a very uncertain and constantly evolving global marketplace, will the Heartland become America’s “great connector” or “great divide”?
