Eyes On...Jonny Stax!

Meet Jonny Stax!

Jonny Stax has served as an EyesOpenIowa board member since 2016. He is also a founder of Jonny Stax Presents, Inc, where he works with clients to help them adapt to the changing world around them and realize their vision. This can include board development coaching, strategic planning, and speaking on diversity and the inclusion process.

Jonny is from the west coast, and has lived in numerous locations, such as Seattle and Washington DC, before he ended up in Iowa. He graduated from the University of Washington.  In Jonny's spare time, he loves to read, play the piano, play with his nieces & nephews, wander his farm, and overall just make himself useful.

Jonny considers one of his most outstanding accomplishments to be producing a rock opera at a venue in Chicago, that drew a crowd of over 800 people with 100 collaborators.

When asked as to why he was interested in being involved with EyesOpenIowa, Jonny discussed how he believes that liberation is the most important value, and that our society hasn't fully achieved that. We generally repress sexual health and sexuality, so he was excited about getting involved with EyesOpenIowa because we take on the hard task of getting people to talk about things that may be uncomfortable. He is really excited about helping more people learn about EyesOpenIowa.

Thank you, Jonny, for your dedication to EyesOpenIowa, as well as all that you have done and will continue to do to help provide Iowa youth with the tools that they need to make informed decisions! We are so fortunate to have you as a part of our team!
February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month!

Teen DV Month is a national campaign that focuses on bringing awareness to the abuse that so often occurs in teen and young adult relationships. Did you know that  1 in 3 teens will experience abuse of some kind from someone they are dating before they reach adulthood?

Abuse can look like a lot of things, including but not limited to:
  • Hitting, kicking, pushing, biting, or other physical violence
  • Isolation from friends/family
  • Name-calling, put-downs, insults
  • Gaslighting (making a person distrust/question their own perception)
  • Threats of any kind
  • Withholding resources or money (often as manipulation)
  • Sharing personal/sensitive information about partner without permission
  • Sexual force or coercion
  • Stalking or monitoring partner
  • Manipulation of partner's social media
Everyone has the right to a happy, healthy, safe relationship. For tips and tricks on how to help empower the teens in your life to build these relationships, check out this awesome toolkit from the NO MORE Campaign below!
