A MESSAGE FROM REV. KAREN KINNEY: WHAT ARE THE QUESTIONS?
Grace and peace to you,
When I was in seminary, one of the classes we were required to take was “The History of Christianity.” Taught in two parts – really, how can 2,000 plus years be taught in one 12-to-16-week course! The first part featured a lot of martyrs – the many whose lives were ended because of their faith. Their stories were recorded in early historical documents. I confess I was often moved to tears at their stories, but I also developed a sense of “I am astounded at their willingness to die for their faith!”
We see stories of martyrdom in Scripture too, and this Sunday we explore the story of Stephen, an early Christian leader in the Jerusalem church tapped to settle a dispute between two branches of the church. He then went on to lead in new and unexpected ways, challenging the viewpoints of other leaders. In the end Stephen was stoned to death. See Acts 6 and 7 for the story.
| | Differences in the church abound – within an individual church as we have witnessed – but also differences between branches of Christianity. These are not always resolved to the satisfaction of everyone involved, but maybe the question really should be – what do the differences reveal about us and the way we handle them? How do we view folks who begin to or want to serve in new and unexpected ways? Is this new and unexpected way a call from God and are we ready to accept it? | | |
Come and explore Stephen’s story this Sunday and let’s see where we land.
Blessings,
Pastor Karen
| | Sunday is Communion Sunday – if joining our livestream,
you can prepare your own elements: bread or bread-like item
(cracker, pita, bagel) and grape juice, wine or water | | HEARTS N MINDS ADULT ED CLASS: JOIN US ON SUNDAY | |
Hearts N Minds has begun a new study, centered on HOPE: A User’s Manual by MaryAnn McKibben Dana. The group meets from 10-11 a.m. in the Parlor. All are welcome, whether you have read the book or not.
We will discuss pages 21-33.
| | |
For kindle users, the titles of these sections are: Hope is NOT Cause and Effect, Hope is NOT the opposite of despair, Hope is NOT solace, and Hope is NOT future-proofing.
Although we long for HOPE to be basically reliable, a straight line from cause to effect, it seldom works that way. Let’s learn how we can cope when life gets out of control.
| | BODY N SOUL: INTERGENERATIONAL FAITH FORMATION | | Body N Soul, our intergenerational faith formation group, meets Sundays between services (10:10 – 11 a.m.) in Fellowship Hall. This spring the group will continue to explore the role of prayer in Christian life through stories, crafts, and conversation. All are welcome! | | |
