A MESSAGE FROM REV. SUZANNE TRUMP: LISTENING FOR UNDERSTANDING
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
Happy Autumn! Welcome to the beautiful rich colors of the fall season. For some reason, Autumn makes me want to clean my house, get some new clothes, and assess how the year is going up to this point. Assessing the year seems like a worthy pursuit as the days become cooler and shorter and I take some time to recharge my batteries.
| |
This Sunday after the 11:15 a.m. Traditional worship service we will have a congregational meeting. As part of the meeting, we will share our current financial situation and begin to assess where we go from here.
This meeting along with the season of Autumn finds me reflecting on how God is calling me to be a witness to God’s love and forgiveness in our community and the world in this season of change. Change for our community of faith, change for our nation as we elect a new President, and as an individual as I continue my faith journey.
| |
|
I know that I am in good company in my dislike of change. I really do not think anyone looks forward to change and invites a constant cycle of change in their life. We like routines, we like knowing what comes next, and we like comfortable, dependable lives that are steady and solid. Along with change, most mainline Protestants do not embrace the concept of “witness” for God. It is not that we do not believe in it or that we are not capable for being a witness for God’s love, it is that we are not encouraged to embrace it and practice it.
So, I am going to challenge all of us, myself included, to both embrace and practice being a witness for God’s love. And to embrace that with change there are new opportunities for witness and spiritual growth. The first thing I am going to ask of you and me is to show up and listen. That’s it, just show up and listen.
Listen to friends and family, neighbors and fellow citizens. Listen to their stories, listen to their concerns, be open and really listen to each other. Try to suspend judgment, try not to insert your own story, try not to state how your viewpoint is different. Just listen to each other. The goal is to acknowledge the divinity in every person. To respect and value each other as a child of God. To acknowledge that we have many viewpoints and if we listen, we might learn something or see a position from a different perspective. Take time to listen, not to convert someone to your point of view, instead try to understand why they feel the way they do.
When we see both the divinity and humanity of each person, we can build a relationship of trust, compassion, and support. We can walk with each other through the changes in our community of faith, in our nation, and in our world. Let’s build a bigger, more inclusive and welcoming table acknowledging our shared divinity and humanity.

FOR SUNDAY: HEARTS N MINDS - ADULT ED CLASS
“The human heart is the first home of democracy. It is where we embrace our questions. Can we be equitable? Can we be generous? Can we listen with our whole beings, not just our minds, and offer our attention rather than our opinions?” - Terry Tempest Williams
The Hearts N Minds adult education class is engaging in a series of discussions designed to spark engagement with democracy and democratic values in a non-partisan way. They will examine the principles of democracy and how to put these ideas into concrete action in participants’ personal and community lives.
They will meet in the Parlor at 10 a.m. on Sunday; Rev. Dr. Steve Simmons will lead the discussion on ‘generosity.’ All are welcome to attend.
| |
FOR SUNDAY: BODY N SOUL - INTERGENERATIONAL FAITH FORMATION
Intergenerational faith formation builds community across generations, providing a space and structure where persons of all ages can learn from each other. Through biblically-based storytelling, small group conversations, interactive group activities, and opportunities for individual contemplation, participants encounter God’s word and explore how it is active in today’s world.
The Body N Soul class will be exploring the curriculum Current: Seeking Peace Together. Divided into four segments, this curriculum explores the topics: Peace with God, Peace Within, Peace with Others, and Peace with Creation. Each week introduces a new story from the Old or New Testament that illustrates God’s shalom.
Body N Soul meets weekly between services (10:10 – 11 a.m.) in Fellowship Hall and continuing through December. All are welcome!

DO YOU FEEL CALLED TO SERVE?
NOMINATIONS DUE SUNDAY, OCT. 13
It’s time to begin the important process of nominating appropriate candidates for Elders, Deacons, Trustees and members of the Nominating Committee.
| |
If you have someone you would like to nominate (or yourself), there will be printed nominating forms available in the Narthex (outside the Sanctuary) and on the info table at the 9 a.m. service. You can also use this online form (bit.ly/3zmHPiY).
|
Please submit your nominations by Sunday, Oct. 13.
Everyone nominated will be contacted to confirm they are eligible to run and asked if they accept the nomination, before their name appears on the ballot. The elections are held in conjunction with our Annual Meeting in January.
Elders comprise the Session of the Presbyterian Church which is, in essence, the decision-making body of the church. They recommend and approve all program and policy implementation and modifications in the church. Elders serve a three year term and the Session meets monthly; Elders generally serve on one or more committees, which also usually meet on a monthly basis.
Deacons are the caregivers of the church. They minister to the individual members through home communion and visits, hospital and prayer ministries, and providing support to those in difficult situations. Deacons serve a three year term and typically meet monthly.
The Nominating Committee members are charged with identifying candidates for Elders, Deacons, Trustees, and the Nominating Committee itself. This committee usually meets three or four times each year; the term of service is one year, and a member may serve no more than two consecutive terms.
Trustees oversee all financial and property matters in the church including the budget, building renovations and repairs, planned giving, and investment funds. Trustees will meet monthly and members will also serve on one additional committee, such as the property or finance committee, which also generally meet monthly. The term for Trustees is three years.
Thank you for supporting this important process!

HI NEIGHBORS SPEAKERS PROGRAM: JOIN US ON MONDAY!
It was another great turnout for last Monday’s Hi Neighbors program, when we heard a fascinating presentation from Chief Adam Waterbear DePaul, Chief of Education and Tribal Storykeeper for the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania. Chief Adam wove together the stories of his people and their history since the arrival of colonists.
|
For this Monday we will turn our sights to the beginnings of modern-day Bethlehem when we hear from John Gallagher about Archibald Johnston. He was instrumental in bringing together the two separate boroughs of South Bethlehem and Bethlehem, and became the new city’s first mayor. John will also share the story of the renovation of Johnston’s former home, the Archie Project.
Hi Neighbors has been bringing interesting programming to our community for many decades. The new series builds on that legacy with nine new presentations, coordinated by volunteer Susan Wolf. The complete schedule is available here (and if you’re on our mailing list, you should have received the schedule in the mail).
All are welcome – no registration fee or sign-up needed. Just come and bring your friends!
