Congratulations Pastor Deb!

Please take a moment to congratulate Pastor Deb on completing her Certification in Interfaith/Interspiritual Direction. Pastor Deb studied with the Spiritual Guidance Training Institute (SGTI) for 16 months in the areas of inter-religion awareness, interspirituality, human and spiritual development, deep listening, contemplation, and guidance to earn this certification. Her training strengthens her ability to recognize and respond to the varying ways people approach the Sacred. Kudos to Pastor Deb for putting in the hard work to reach this goal!

Epiphany Star Words

About 10 or so years ago, a practice was created for Epiphany that has become increasingly popular in a lot of churches – it’s known as Star Words or Star Gifts. The premise is this: the Magi followed the star to find baby Jesus, bringing their gifts. We are also seeking Jesus, trusting God can/does use many signs (or stars) to guide us closer to the Divine presence.

If you were not in church on January 5th to take a star word, you can choose one from the bulletin board by the church office. Or contact the church office and we will mail one to you.

Throughout this coming year, you are invited to reflect on the word you have received. Ponder what significance this word might have in your life and how God might be speaking to you through its simple message. Hang it somewhere you will see it regularly and be reminded to listen again to how God is guiding you. Reflect on how God has moved through, around, or in connection to that word.

During the year, we’ll also be asking occasional questions to get you thinking again about the gifts you’ve received through your word. Today’s question is: What initial thoughts, impressions, and prayers do you have for your star word?

2025 Per Capita

Per capita for 2025 is $40 per person. If you would kindly note “per capita” on the memo line of your check, we would appreciate it.

We want to ensure that everyone understands that per capita apportionments are not “dues.” We don’t “charge” dues. A per capita payment simply means that you would like to contribute to the amount that First Pres is assessed by the PC(USA) to support big picture goals and objectives. Our local church doesn’t keep a dime of per capita contributions. We send it on to the denomination where it’s used for these purposes:

  • Partnering with ecumenical bodies worldwide to promote Christian unity
  • Witnessing on behalf of the church on social issues
  • Identifying and supporting the development of church leadership
  • Planning for the biennial General Assembly meetings
  • Administration of the Church Leadership Connection – the referral system that connects pastors and congregations
  • Publication of the Book of Order and the Book of Confessions, which are the Constitution of the PC(USA)
  • Maintaining judicial services
  • Staffing, training, and meeting costs for General Assembly committees essential to the governance of the church
  • Serving as home for the Presbyterian Historical Society, where church records are preserved

So, today, let’s put to rest the myth that per capita is a dues assessment that equals being part of our local faith community. Yes, we encourage per capita contributions because they free up our resources for local missions and sustenance of our congregation. But, if you don’t feel called to offer per capita, you’ll still get our newsletter, you’ll still receive announcements, and most importantly, you’ll still be a beloved part of our flock.

January 18: Day of Sparkle

(National Day of Action for Stalking Awareness)

The National Day of Action for Stalking Awareness takes place during National Stalking Awareness Month (NSAM) in January. The day was chosen to honor Peggy Klinke, who was murdered by her stalker and ex-boyfriend on January 18, 2003. She tried to escape him multiple times, even moving states away and filing for a restraining order. But he hired a private investigator in order to track her down and kill her.

Here’s how you can participate:

  • Wear something sparkly: Wear sparkly, bright, shiny clothing or accessories to show support for survivors and raise awareness and “bring back the sparkle” to people’s lives
  • Use social media: Post photos of yourself or others with the hashtags #SparkleAgainstStalking, #NSAM2025, and #NSAMDayofAction
  • Learn more: Educate yourself about stalking and how to support survivors

We can’t underestimate the importance of this issue. Stalking is a dangerous and traumatic crime that is often underreported and minimized. By raising awareness and supporting survivors, we can help hold offenders accountable and prevent future harm.

Each of us can be a powerful foe of stalkers and here’s what you can do to help survivors:

  • Take threats seriously: Don’t minimize or dismiss threats or behaviors, even if they seem minor.
  • Document everything: Encourage survivors to keep records of stalking behaviors.
  • Create a safety plan: Connect survivors with local resources to create a personalized safety plan.
  • Know the law: Familiarize yourself with state-specific laws and resources to provide the best support.

Support Hope Fridge’s Return to Oshkosh

Donation Details: info@hopefridge.com

As Hope Fridge steps into the new year, they have a lot of new possibilities ahead of them! One of which is bringing a Hope Fridge location back to Oshkosh. But before they can do that, they have to get their ducks in a row. They’re requesting help with their administrative needs, specifically the cost of filing their own 501(c)3, as well as the annual cost of keeping their website active. The 501(c)3 filing will allow them to finally begin to receive funding again following the surprise closure of their fiscal host last year. Maintaining their website will allow them to continue to communicate important information with our community, including location(s) and safety protocols.

Helping to eradicate systemic poverty one Christmas purchase at a time

Third Presbyterian Church in Rochester, New York encourages members to spend generously at area brown- and Black-owned businesses

Emily Enders Odom, Presbyterian News Service

December 6, 2024

ROCHESTER, New York — As far as Third Presbyterian Church’s Anti-Racism Task Force was concerned, the already overcrowded, post-Thanksgiving calendar was missing a critically important date for holiday shoppers.

That oversight was corrected in 2024 when — thanks to the efforts of Beth Laidlaw, Bill Jones, Bob Melech and the Rev. Tedd Pullano — the congregation’s Brown/Black Owned Business Initiative joined the likes of Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday by getting its own designated calendar square.

“As the Christmas season was approaching this year, we had a Kairos moment,” said Pullano, the church’s associate pastor for Outreach. “Someone on the task force wondered aloud, ‘We are entering the holiday season when people are already going to be spending money on going out to eat, gifts, all kinds of things. What if we created an easy program for our members and friends to make some of those normal holiday purchases at brown/Black-owned businesses?’ And so, after lots of joyful discussion, the initiative was born.” Read more.
