Tenney Park, John Wall Family Pavilion

402 N. Thornton Avenue, Madison

Join Physicians for Social Responsibility Wisconsin (PSR WI) for their annual Lanterns for Peace event, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. This family-friendly gathering invites our community to reflect, create, and commit to a future free from the threat of nuclear weapons.

Together, we honor the memory of lives lost and unite in our shared hope for a more peaceful, just, and nuclear-free world.

Event Schedule:

  • 6:30 PM – Event opens to the public & lantern-making begins
  • 7:30 PM – Commemorative program begins
  • ~7:45–8:00 PM – Lanterns launched at dusk onto the Tenney Park Lagoon

This event is free and open to the public. Bring your friends, family, and your vision for a peaceful world.

Can't Attend in Person? Decorate Your Own Lantern at Home!

Create a message of peace, justice, and a nuclear weapon-free future using words, drawings, or symbols and choose one of the following options:

1.     Decorate a Paper Lantern Panel

Use letter (8.5" x 11") or legal (8.5" x 14") sized paper. Crayons, markers, colored pencils, or paint are all welcome. Mail your artwork to PSR, and they’ll assemble it onto a lantern.

 2.     Make a “Ready-to-Assemble” Lantern Panel

Tape, staple, or glue together: 3 letter-size sheets (8.5” x 11”) OR 2 legal-size sheets (8.5” x 14”), and then form a square shape with each side, approximately 6.5 inches (same as past lanterns). Decorate each panel and send it in as one unit.

3.     Share Your Lantern Online

Take a photo or video of your artwork before mailing it, and post it to Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn using the hashtag #LanternsForPeace.

4.     Mail or Drop Off Your Lantern Art*

Send your finished lantern panel to: PSR Wisconsin, 720 Hill Street, Suite 200, Madison, WI 53705 OR contact Marta at 608-232-9945 to arrange a drop-off.

*Please Note: Lanterns will not be returned. Be sure to take a photo before mailing yours in. PSR will do its best to document all the lanterns at the event!

General Assembly committee publishes a resource to help Presbyterians confront Christian nationalism

GACEIR document includes a liturgical witness against the growing movement

Mike Ferguson, Presbyterian News Service

July 8, 2025

LOUISVILLE — The General Assembly Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Relations has a recent resource to help Presbyterians learn more about confronting Christian nationalism.

The two-page document includes answers to frequently-asked questions and “God of All,” a liturgical witness against Christian nationalism by Dr. Whitney Wilkinson Ameche and the Rev. Dr. Jacob Bolton. The authors acknowledge the influence of the writer and poet Cole Arthur Riley.

“The Presbyterian Church has had long-standing interfaith dialogue partners and it is incumbent upon us to stand with them when they are under assault, directly or indirectly, by Christian nationalism,” committee members said. “Recent events such as the second Trump Muslim ban and the antisemitic attacks in Washington and Boulder, Colorado, are examples that leave those communities with psychological and political tolls, and a cost that could include loss of power long struggled for. This kind of toll is not felt by the mainstream Protestant community unless we confess our part in it.” Read more.
