New Live Streaming Service Begins This Sunday

This Sunday begins our transition from using Zoom for live viewing the worship service. Sunday we introduce a higher quality, more reliable live-streaming service that is easily accessed from our church website http://fpcspringfield.org/

For the next couple of Sundays we will continue to provide Zoom in parallel just in case you have an issue with the new system. However we will continue to provide the Zoom audio only phone dial-in option for the foreseeable future.

We encourage you to try the new system this week.

Instructions:
1.   At 10:55 A.M. or after go to http://fpcspringfield.org/
2.   Click on the “Service” tab found at the right side of the row of tabs at the top of the main page.
3.   You will be taken to a new page where you will find the live video viewer.

The live video should start at 10:55 A.M. If you go there too early, before the stream goes live, the player will not play.

That’s it. It’s that simple.

To Explore More:
·        The new live streaming service is hosted on YouTube and uses YouTube Live for real time viewing. You can find our “channel” by searching on YouTube for First Presbyterian Church Springfield, PA – Delco.
·        You can also “subscribe” to our “First Presbyterian Church Springfield, PA - Delco” channel and view all video content including previously recorded services. Though it may take several hours or even overnight for the most recent recordings to be available.
·        This new system will provide a better live video and audio experience as well as the ability to record and view events on-demand.
·        We encourage you to try out the new system before Sunday. To get an idea of what the video will look like with the new system visit the YouTube First Presbyterian Church Springfield, PA – Delco channel and view some of the recordings that are there. We have been practicing with the new equipment and recording some services over the last few weeks.

Please let Dave Hartrum know of issues or suggested improvements that you have.

Christian Nationalism and the Capitol Insurrection

After considering some feedback to the sermon I preached on the Sunday following the Capitol insurrection, I can understand how my words could have been misconstrued and led to conclusions that some could find upsetting given the fractured condition of our society --conclusions that don’t reflect what I believe nor what I intended. In an effort to be fair about possible misinterpretations, I offer the following clarifications.

1.     I believe that the vast majority of the people present at the January 6 morning rally on the Mall did not participate in the afternoon storming of the Capitol. The vast majority of the participants at the morning rally were peacefully protesting and not involved in the insurrection.

2.     I believe the vast majority of Christians who have supported Donald Trump are not Christian Nationalists. James Dobson and Franklin Graham do not meet my definition of Christian Nationalism. Though I am saddened by their political rhetoric, my judgments end there and should not be generalized to their core Christian ministries. After several weeks of study I’ve come to the conclusion that Christian Nationalist idolatry is located in a loose nationwide network of churches that share in common the Apostle/Prophet ministry model combined with Dominion Theology. This is a fringe movement and not characteristic of mainstream evangelicalism.

3.      I believe that political party affiliation is a matter of conscience. I believe the platforms of both parties are written with the best intentions for the United States of America and its people. I believe that both parties share culpability for our present state of dysfunction. I believe that the populist movements on both left and right have legitimate grievances that were ignored for too long.

I offer this in all humility because my thoughts are no better than anyone else’s and I offer it
with the intention to live in the Spirit of Colossians 3:12-14,

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

FEBRUARY MISSION OF THE MONTH

Community Action Agency of Delaware County

Community Action Agency of Delaware County, Inc (CAADC) is our mission of the month for February. The CAADC’s mission is to assist families and individuals who are in need and help them move toward economic self-sufficiency and reduce their dependence on public support through innovative approaches to programs including: provision of professional case management services, life skills training, employment training, assistance with housing and social services, community strengthening and economic development. CAADC is the primary provider of emergency housing to homeless families and individuals in Delaware County. Shelter is provided at various locations including the Life Center of Eastern Delaware County located at 63rd and Market Streets in Upper Darby where we serve meals during the year. Residents can participate in the evening meal program and the Life Center also supplements their morning and noon meals. A community shower program is also available several days a week. Shelter residents receive multiple services, including counseling, life skills classes, and health clinics. CAADC also supports the Wesley House Emergency Shelter and the Family Management Center both located in Chester. These shelters maintain rooms for families or single women and together they serve over 100 households each year on average. Please consider providing financial support to this organization that provides much needed assistance for so many in our local community.
Opportunity for Family Service Project with Springfield Souper Bowl of Caring

On Saturday February 6, volunteers will collect canned goods from all over Springfield and drop them off at several collection sites or “drop-off” sites: Covenant United Methodist Church, Tree of Life Church & The Blue Church. At these sites canned goods are sorted and packed in boxes for delivery to local food pantries.

Due to Covid protocols for indoor space and social distancing, the sorting and packing stage at the three churches will extend far into the week after the Super Bowl.

Family bubbles are the perfect Covid remedy for working together sorting and packing at the sites. Family experiences like this are fun, formative, enriching, and helpful. Every family will want to be able to look back and remember occasions where they did a service project together.

Use the Sign-up Genius to choose:
·        The day you want to serve.
·        The place you want to serve.
·        The hours you want to serve.

Here’s the link . . . and have fun!

Preparation for Communion via Zoom Worship

1.    Have bread and “cup” (wine or grape juice) ready before worship begins. There are no special types of bread and drink that are needed. Though bread and grape derived drink are preferred, there are no rules or regulations for what constitutes bread & drink. A special trip to the grocery store is not necessary. Use what you have on hand.

2.    Pastor Ed will lead communion in the same manner you are familiar with: introduction, invitation, prayer of thanksgiving including prayer requests, words of institution, taking the elements together and closing prayer.

3.    Bread and drink that are not consumed do not require special means of disposal since they are not inherently sacred or holy by consecration.
