Rooted in Faith, Growing in Gratitude…
Lighting the Path Forward
| | | | | |
Our four-week Generosity Campaign concludes on Sunday, November 9, and we hope every member and friend will join us for this special Commitment Sunday worship and celebration lunch!
During worship, we’ll dedicate our 2026 financial commitments to God — a joyful expression of gratitude for all God has done and continues to do through our church. Please bring your completed commitment card and take part in this milestone moment in our 150th year of ministry.
After worship, stay for a free celebration lunch, featuring a delicious buffet catered by Mission BBQ — pulled chicken, pulled pork, mac & cheese, baked beans, coleslaw, and dessert. It’s a time to celebrate God’s abundance, our church family, and the bright future ahead of us.
During this journey we’ve explored both gratitude and what it means to be generous through a daily devotional that helped us celebrate our past and commit to our future, heard from new members about what they see in our church today, and shared stories of the saints who came before us. We even kicked things off with “Rooted in Faith”-beer floats — a lighthearted reminder that gratitude can be both joyful and sweet!
As we close this campaign, we also continue our “150 Acts of Generosity”. Everyone is encouraged to share an act(s) of time, talent, or service — and write it on a leaf for our Generosity Tree in the sanctuary. Each leaf is a visible reminder of the good works we do every day and a celebration of our personal relationships with Christ and the work he is calling each of us and our church to do.
On Sunday, November 9, let us gather in gratitude, celebrate God’s abundance, and light the path forward — together!

| | All Saints' Day - November 2nd | | | | |
For all the saints, who from their labors rest…
November brings us to a season of thanksgiving, and we are surely thankful for all the “saints” of this congregation and throughout our extended families who have gone on to their heavenly homes in the past year.
On Sunday, November 2 we will celebrate All Saints’ Day in worship, remembering especially Jo Leicht, Donna Jansen, Don Lundin, and Clarence Mickelson. We have reached out to surviving family members, inviting them to participate in this special celebration. We are looking for a picture or two of each deceased member to project during the worship service. As those photos are projected, we will join in prayer for all the saints and remember each name. As the names are read, a family member or friend will come forward to light a candle for each one.
Following the recognition of those members, others will be invited to come forward and light a candle for a friend or family member they have lost in the last year as well. We remember and give thanks for all those who have gone before us to show us the way—don’t miss this special worship experience.
| | | Thanksgiving Worship Service With FUPC De Pere - November 22nd | | | | |
Our sisters and brothers in Christ at First United Presbyterian Church in De Pere have invited us to join them once again for a special worship service celebrating Thanksgiving followed by a Thanksgiving dinner on Saturday, November 22.
Worship will be at 4:45 pm and will feature our choirs singing together and another fun skit celebrating the season. A delicious Thanksgiving dinner will follow the service, and is open to the community.
Let’s have a big showing from our congregation in response to this gracious invitation—we ALL have so much to be thankful for.
| | | Advent Begins November 30th | | | | |
It seems like we barely put away the Thanksgiving leftovers and suddenly it is Advent!
Advent begins this year on Sunday, November 30th and we will kick off the season with our annual Advent festival following worship.
Open to all ages, this event will feature crafts, activities, and Kevin’s famous chili lunch.
Our mission opportunity this time is called “Pack-A-Purse” so all month in advance we’ll be collecting your secondhand purses plus all kinds of things to go in them for women at the local shelters.
Please join us for this all-church celebration.
| | | Choir Camp - November 8th | | | | |
It’s a busy time of the year for music!
With Advent and Christmas coming, we have many occasions to provide music. In addition to singing at least twice a month for Sunday Worship, we will be participating in the Thanksgiving Service at First United Presbyterian Church in De Pere on November 22 and the Ecumenical Christmas Concert at Ascension Lutheran on December 14.
To prepare all the music for these events, we will have an extended choir rehearsal (camp) on Saturday, November 8, 9:00-11:30AM in the choir room.
Come and join us in these music ministry opportunities!

Our Church's Buildings
By: Bruce Deadman

The Early Days
The recorded history of our church starts with a meeting held March 13, 1876 by nine interested men at the West Side (then Fort Howard) home of banker David McCartney.
The group established Sunday “meetings” at Salscheider’s Hall on the corner of Walnut and Pearl Streets, the current site of Family and Childcare Resources of Northeast Wisconsin, formerly the Northwest Engineering building. Rent was two dollars a week, plus an additional 50 cents per week for fuel. The first meeting was held without a pastor on May 2, 1876. There were 15 charter members.
Construction must have began almost immediately on the first church building, a fairly rudimentary affair located on Chestnut Street between Main and Hubbard Streets, because according to church records it was completed on July 22, 1876, and was dedicated on Christmas Eve of that year with our first pastor, Reverend David Street, officiating.

First Pres Moves to Our Current Location
In 1892, with Rev. J. F. Young as pastor, a second church building, fully equipped and including electric lights, was erected on our present site. The cost of this building, $7,000, was a gift from David McCartney, a local banker.
The story of McCartney’s gift is quite inspirational. In addition to being founder and President of McCartney National Bank, McCartney had invested in timber land in Georgia. His bank had been robbed of a substantial sum. Rather than hiring detectives, McCartney put his trust in God. While he was overseeing his lumber holdings near Thomasville, Georgia, McCartney received word that most of the money had been recovered without cost to the bank. In gratitude to God, he resolved to do something for God and the church building was the result.
Side note: The rise and fall of McCartney National Bank is an interesting and ultimately tragic story. Its demise during the Great Depression, due in large part to questionable loaning practices involving several bank officials and businesses including the Larsen Canning Company, accompanied by the suicide of the bank’s President, George A. Richardson, in 1931 helped lead to many reforms in both national banking and investment practices. The assets of the McCartney Bank were ultimately acquired by the Kellog Bank, today’s Associated Bank, See https://numismaticnotebook.com/2019/03/22/the-collapse-of-the-mccartney-national-bank-of-green-bay/ for the whole story.

Our Current Building
Our current building was constructed in 3 phases over some 70 years. Phase 1 began in 1924 with the razing of the “McCartney” church and ended with the completion of the new building (our current sanctuary, library, choir room and upstairs meeting areas) in April 1925 at a cost of $50,000.00. Phase 1 was dedicated on April 19, 2025 with the Reverend H.E. Easly presiding.
| | | Phase 2 was the 1954-55 construction of the first floor of the Educational Wing (today’s church offices and Fellowship Room) and the extensive renovation of the Sanctuary, notably the elimination of the main entrance on Ashland Avenue due to the expansion of Ashland from two to four lanes. The balcony across the chancel was eliminated and the organ pipes moved to their present location on the south side of the chancel. This phase included the Ann Bannon Memorial Chancel and the Nils Olson Memorial windows. The first floor was constructed such that a second story could be added later. | | | | | | |
In 1961, outdoor organ chimes (since removed) and 13 memorial stained glass windows were installed and dedicated. Look to future articles for details.
Finally, in 1994-95 our church assumed its present form with the addition of a second story to the educational wing.
Parsonages (Manses)
Over the years, First Presbyterian has also owned several parsonages for the use of our clergy. The first parsonage, located on Howard Street, was built in 1896 at a total cost of $1852, including the cost of the lot. In 1915, this building was razed and a new parsonage built.
The Howard St. parsonage was sold in 1962 and was replaced by a home on Tomark St.
The practice of churches owning a parsonage began to fall out of favor, leading to the 1979 sale of the Tomark St. manse to then pastor Elmon Ward. From that point forward, pastors have received a housing allowance.
