A Letter from the CEO...

Greetings and Happy New Year!

I hope each and every one of you had a wonderful and blessed holiday season!

Over the past several weeks, we have spent a fair amount of time to reflect on the many accomplishments and advancements for our Club. Throughout the year, we have been faced with many challenges, some more challenging than others, but each one of them have helped our team and our family grow stronger. We have also had the opportunity to celebrate many accomplishments over the year. A few of these accomplishments include; taking our local Youth of the Year winner, Yasimine Hamilton to Springfield to visit the State Capitol, being recognized by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America for Outstanding Program of the Year for our Impact Volunteer Program, receiving the Excellence in Mentoring Award from the 100 Black Men of Central Illinois, and Boys & Girls Clubs of America recognized our Board of Directors for their outstanding leadership and commitment to youth with the Gold Level, League of EAGLES award. We were also honored to join Dodie Dunson, our Director of Family Engagement, and his wife, Jaci, when Mayor Koos, surprised him with the Town of Normal Citizen of the Year award, for the amazing things he has done for our community.

We are truly humbled and greatly appreciate receiving these honors. However, there are two accomplishments of which we are most proud. In September, the City of Bloomington, City Council, unanimously approved our partnership to purchase land at Sunnyside Park which will be the future home of a new Boys & Girls Club for our community. In addition, we have built a partnership with First Christian Church of Bloomington, which is now a chartered Unit of the Boys & Girls Club of Bloomington-Normal, for our Teen CLUB. These accomplishments have allowed us the opportunity to open our doors and provide a safe, fun and supportive place for more youth in our community to come after school and in the Summer.

Thank you to each of these organizations for the recognition, but most importantly thank all of you for joining us in our mission “to empower all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.” We cannot thank our community enough. Without the support of our Board of Directors, our Community Advisory Council, our staff, our volunteers, our families and our amazing community, we could not have accomplished these amazing things on our own.

We have established our goals for the new year and are focused on strengthening our organization in preparation for growth. We are still in the planning stages for our Comprehensive Campaign and look forward to sharing this exciting information with the community soon. While working towards are vision, we will continue to focus on making sure our members and their safety remain our #1 priority.

We are excited for all of the amazing things 2020 will bring. We hope that you will join us in our vision, to provide a community where every young person has an opportunity for a great future!

I CARE,
Tony Morstatter

Program Highlights
Holiday Shopping Spree
Special thanks to:
  • ISU’s Holiday Helper and State Farm’s Giving Tree, who organized specific gifts for all of our members,
  • The individuals and organizations who sponsored a family
  • The Tinervin Family Foundation who brought brand-new shoes and food boxes, turkey & ham
  • Lowe’s, who came up with the genius idea to bring grocery carts to help families to their cars
  • First Book of McLean County which allowed us to send home a book for each child to open on Christmas Day
  • Grove Street Bakery who provided awesome cinnamon rolls. YUM!
It’s the most wonderful time
of the year!
This is what we always say around the holiday season. And for our Club this was especially true for us this year. The Club hosts a Holiday Shopping Spree towards the end of December. During this annual event, our families and neighbors come and “shop”, at no cost, for holiday gifts for their families. This is one of our most favorite days of the year. Not only do we see so many of our adult family members but we see an outpouring of support from our community with gifts, wrapping paper and tape, shoes, food boxes in addition to the many people who come and spend the day with us.
Of course we could not do this without all of the amazing people who joined us that day passing out presents, wrapping gifts and helping families through the process:

  • Board members and their families
  • Our neighbors from Cargill
  • The lovely women and their families from Zeta Phi Beta
  • NCHS Girls Softball Team
  • Our friends of the Club including The Lowery Family, The Lay Family, the DeHaai Family and Carla Barnes and Family
  • BNGSA’s ’03 Angels, Kumon Math and Reading Center of Bloomington and Eastview Christian Church
  • Our amazing staff and their families.
Leaders On Loan
One of our organizational goals for the year is to streamline our hiring processes. We have been blessed with an opportunity through McLean County Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership McLean County Leaders on Loan Program. We have been assigned 5 community partners who bring their skills, talents and knowledge to the Club. The goal of this collaboration is to develop a process that will allow us to hire and retain the best people for the position. We our piloting this with our Youth Development Specialists as we seem to have the highest turnover in this area. This project is in alignment with our BGCA Advanced Leadership Academy project where we divided this undertaking into four areas: Pre-Onboarding, Onboarding, Training and Retention.
The LOL team has provided us with deliverables for the pre-onboarding section and we are already implementing them into our process. These deliverables include pre-interview and interview rubric, updated employment application, recruitment strategies (including social media) and professional growth tracks (for our YDPs).
We have a current need and have been utilizing these tools, updating as we go to fit our needs. We are excited moving forward into the onboarding process.
Christmas Choir
For many people, celebrating the season begins with music. Beginning in early October our Christmas Choir practiced with our director, Libby Warden, to bring music to our community neighbors. Libby has two grandchildren who are club members and wanted to do something special for the Club. With her love and talent for music, the Christmas Choir was an easy fit. The choir, fitted with scarves and bells provided by Libby, sang at our annual Be Great Breakfast, the tree lighting at the Community Cancer Center and our friends at Welbrook at Bloomington.
Our 2019 Be Great Breakfast was the best one yet! We enjoyed a special visit from some of our club members and staff including our K-5 Holiday Choir, founding CEO, Evelyn Young, and NFL Chicago Bears star, Desmond Clark.
With over 900 RSVPs, we knew it would be a full house. A big thank you to everyone who spoke, attended and gifted to the club. And a special thank you to our host, Barry Reilly and the great staff at the Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. Our kids are so blessed to have such amazing support from our community leaders!
